Barrie, maybe you can help. i am confused.i always thought the word “sun” was “Matahari”. “surya” was a balinese name?
whenever down kuta beach we always said “matahari terbenam” (sunset) id never heard anyone say “surya terbenam”. please end my confusion…..

Hi Stavros,

You are correct. The word ’surya’ is literary and is rarely seen in books these days, and, rarely used in conversation except on the odd occasion with high caste.

Stick to what you have learnt - Matahari. The actual meaning being ‘The eye of the day’.
