Here in Kedisan I see a decent amount of tourists. It still quiet (apart from the dump trucks) but there are British, Irish and French people as well as a few Indonesian tourists I've seen.
Here inside the crater there are places to stay in Kedisan and more further along lakeside at Toya Bunkah, where most of the treks start. To get to the top of the mountain by sunrise you are looking at a 4am start, sunrise being around 6.30am. When hiking you will perspire heavily going up, but 5 minutes after reaching the summit shiver in the cool air. Bring a change of t-shirt, sweater, water and snack.
If you want to visit the Bali Aga village at Trunyan (not recommended ) I advice you to drive as far round the southern side of the lake as possible to the village of Abang, where you can get a much better deal on a boast than from Kedisan.
This morning I chatted with 3 Irish guys I met. They did the Batur sunrise trek and got charged $50!!! Fifty dollars for walking up a hill!
I asked them how it went and they said it was okay, but nothing special. I suggested they try Gunung Abang or Gunung Catur which are free.
