Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim country, but not everyone here is Muslim and those who are are generally quite liberal. It always struck me as weird how a country so far removed, geographically and culturally from the Middle East would be a home for Islamic extremists.

Azyumardi Azra, who is professor of history and rector of Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) in Jakarta, talks about Islamic radical movements in Indonesia. Far from being one united group of people who are all totally commited and totally violent, he points. out they are a mixed bag, with a range of goals.

This Christmas season has been peaceful so far. We’re hoping for a quiet New Years to go with it.
