If you haven’t experienced a downpour in a tropical location let me tell you its an experience to remember.
Last night after a very hot humid day the rain started at 5pm and came down pretty steadily, you know straight down like a shower. I was at the house in Seminyak and wanted to get to Kuta to get online and do some things. I was pulling my hair out as I couldn’t find my waterproof pants. Finally located them underneath a pile of computer cables and hardware ( that’s always a good place to look for us BootsnAll people).
Wearing my jacket, pants and helmet I was pretty well covered although they were saggy and wet when I got downtown. Of course the lower part of Jl. Legian was totally flooded as was Jl. Benesari in Kuta. I went into Warung 96 and got a fish & chips for 23,000rp. The steps to the warung and its wall were like a dam holding back the water.
Internet access was very slow, I tried 2 places and wasn’t getting very far. After a couple of hours I stepped outside and the rain was still lashing. Riding home up Jl. Legian I made sure not to exceed 25mph. Traffic was fairly light and I was glad to get back and out of my soggy outerwear.
This morning the sky was slightly overcast but clearer than the night before. The only damage I could detect were a few petals on my lawn. Riding the Bypass down to Kuta I took my usual turn off and saw a bunch of people who were pulled over up ahead. A paddy field had burst its wall and the street had become a river.
I was contemplating riding through this but saw a couple of motorbikes get halfway and their engine stall suddenly. That means pushing your bike out and trying to get it started again which some people were having trouble doing.
A quick detour took me down to Imam Bongol and round to Pantai Kuta. I like the way the locals here don’t panic about the weather. They’ve seen it all before and know a good soaking won’t kill them.
The temperatures are much nicer after the downpour and I’m sure it won’t be long till the next one.
I’ve added some photos to my article about helping Bill look for houses.
For those about to come to Bali here’s our 10 day weather forecast.
I’m looking outside onto Poppies II and its bright sunshine. The wet season doesn’t mean constant rain by any means and we’re actually lucky that the rain saves itself for nightime downpours, leaving the day free to enjoy.
The new visa policy is in effect here in Bali and a former chief of the Bali Tourist Authority has recently given his views on the new proceedure. Why couldn’t this guy be in charge?

I was thinking to ride jetski on the Legian road last night. That will be just perfect. We haven’t had this kind of rain/storm for sometime.
G’Day Nick,
It’d be good if they could some how generate a few waves out of that flood, then you could surf downtown!. Hey, ya gotta love those tropical storms. Always something happening.
We wouldn’t mind some rain over in Brissy to cool down the temps. Supposed to reach 38 degrees on Friday.
G’Day Chris,
Gez you got it easy over there on the East coast. Last two days here have been sizzling around the 41c mark. Cope with that okay but when it’s 32c at night – Yuk!.
Sounds like I`m in the right place, we have had beautiful weather here in the passed few days in Vic and today 19/04 is just perfect. I suppose Melbourne can get it right sometimes. Ha Ha Ha!!!
Robyn, wholeheartedly agree, the weather in Melb has been delightful! Although a choice between beautiful weather in Melb & raining storm weather in Bali, I’d choose Bali everytime!!!!
Hi Tracey,
Tend to agree with you there!. Much prefer the tropical weather in bali. In Oz it it so dry and damn humid.
Hey Bazza, you been a bit quiet of late!
How’s things? Any travel plans in the water!? Gede’s job was casual & looks like next Friday he will be looking for PERMANENt work, as they have no more orders to be filled. But have applied for 18 jobs for him today, hopefully something comes of it!
Take Care & hope all is WELL!
Hi Tracy,
I agree with you 100%, it sure would be nice sitting around with a group of friends having a laugh & a drink or two watching a downpour in magical Bali!
Hey Tracey,
looks like we both are dreaming at the same time!!!!!
Hi Tracey,
Yeah, I have been a tad quiet!. Actually Candika was over here for 2 months and just left, so naturally the blues set in. Couldn’t get any work done whilst she was here and so now I am in the throes of catching up on editing etc.
Super-pleased that Gede obtained some kind of employment. Things will get better for him – just hang in there!
I will be returning to Bali soon but it’s a case of one project at a time. C wants me to return to Yogya for a while but once you’ve seen one pemilih umum, you’ve seen them all!. How will Gede go with regards to voting?. Will he have to vote in the upcoming elections?. C was telling me yesterday that they have to vote 3 times!. Yaitu, on three seperate occasions!.
Had not thought of him needing to vote, better check that out…. But I don’t believe it is illegal not to, like here!
Sorry, you got them lonely blues, know them only too well! THEY SUCK!
Having to catch up on stuff is not the best either!!!
\Robyn, if you win lotto, or I win lotto, we can do just that, I am hoping one day we can buy a cafe/bar for the family to run until it is really booming again & we won’t have to work here anymore so we can return HOME to Bali…
I am in a rut of a mood at present, feeling really trapped, not in regard to my lovely hubby & daughter, but feel like I got my job & stuff all holding me back, but really we can’t afford to do anything about it… I think it must be those blues, as before if I got itchy I’d quit my job & return to Bali for 6 months plus, but now Maddy has started school, I have a good job, Gede is here now…. BUT I WISH WE WERE ALL BACK IN BALI!!! booo hoo poor me!
Sorry, just having a whinge!!!!
Tracey,
Gede will most probably have to go to the Indo Embassy to vote. Shit, that’s obvious!. Dumb ass me!. Give them a ring.
Bazza, WOW so very helpful… (just teasing)….
