Bali gets its water primarily from the 4 big lakes (Batur, Buyan, Bratan and Tamblingan) in the highlands. The lakes feed the rivers that run all year and the underground wells that are tapped all over the island. Balinese people will tell you that its safe to drink Bali water, right out of the ground sometimes suggesting that (government water) tap water has had something done to it. The favorite kind of bottled water is Aqua which comes from a spring in Mambal, west of Ubud. Ika and I stumbled on the spring and the filtration plant. They have a 37 step process to ensure the water is clean and there is a pipe drawing the water from the source to the plant. Amazing to think that every bottle of Aqua passed through that pipe at some time.
Springs and rivers are auspicious places for Balinese and so there is also a temple close to the source complete with outlets for priests to fill bottles with holy water. I will think of this tranquil place the next time I sip Aqua.
