Saturday night Ika and I checked out a Thai place on Jl. Kartika Plaza called Kin Khao. I was fancying Thai food and looked it up on a local restaurant site called BaliEats.

Jl. Kartika Plaza is a very busy street and likely the first place many visitors to Bali stay. Among the attractions on Jl. Kartika Plaza is Bali Slingshot, the double rope catapult that launches pairs of riders in the air, enclosed in a circular metal capsule, Pizza Hut, Dee Jay Café and Stadium Café. The latest addition to the street is the Discovery shopping Mall which looks like something out of Las Vegas. It contains many shops plus a new Pizza Hut and Starbucks.
The Kin Khao is located past the new shopping complex going south and across the street. There was parking in the rear so we parked and decided to sit out front in the little wooden bar area. It had just rained so some of the larger tables were already cleared away. Inside was rather elegant but the AC was really pumping and the outside temperature was more comfortable. The Kin Khao seems very popular with tourists from NE Asia.
I am trying to shake some of the kampung out of Ika and Thai food was part of the plan. Coming from the same part of the world I thought she might prefer it to English food. We ordered a big bowl of Tum Yum Gung which contained coriander (cilantro), shrimp, lemon grass, chili, mushrooms and other items. I loved it and Ika thought the taste was strange. You get many flavours with Thai food I said. Yeas she said, screwing her nose up. Not to worry, a year from now she will be asking for Tum Yum Gung.
Ika told me something amazing the other night. The subject of the Bali bombing came up and I asked her if she was in Bali then. She told me she was in Kuta and was actually on Poppies Lane II in a taxi when the bomb went off. I asked whereabouts on Poppies II and Ika said she was 3 car lengths from Jl. Legian! That is about 20 meters from the blast. Between her taxi and the Sari Club was Aloha surf shop which had thick cement walls and that is probably what saved her and her sister who were riding with another friend from Java. I asked what she did when the bomb went off and Ika said there was a big orange flash and she remembers saying it was just like a bomb. After closing her eyes and staying nisdie the car for a minute they noticed the driver had run off, so they decided to head for the beach. At Pantai Kuta a TV vehicle asked them questions and offered to take them to Denpasar, where the 3 of them spent all night talking about what had happened.
She is very lucky and if her car had of been the first in the line she might not be here today.
Main course was a beef dish with chili, onion and other vegetable while Ika ordered a fried noodle dish. I was driving so we ordered water for drinks. I told Ika I really liked the view and she said it was nice to watch the people in the street. Actually I was referring to the large TV to my left which had the start of the Chelsea vs. Everton game on. How lucky can a guy get? You trade your soccer watching to take the wife to dinner and the universe provides you with a TV all to yourself! That is karma in action.
My food was great and I gobbled it down. Ika said hers was so so and we will give the Kin Khao another shot some other time. Our bill for 2 waters, a large soup and 2 main courses was 110,000rp.
There is actually another Thai place between Kin Khao and Stadium Café that I want to check out too.

They don’t supply cots for children. Has anyone stayed there? Can I buy a new cots somewhere cheap in Bali? Any tips travelling with a 2 1/2year old Tiger (child). To make life easy for the parents

I’d suggest Nick have a look at Matahari’s for you on regards to a cot… But I’d say they’d have them there & would not be too expensive?
With regards to kids, I’d suggest doing all you can early in the morning, like shopping/touring etc & then in afternoons perhaps swim in pool, then surely your angel will be exhausted enough for a sleep, whilst you enjoy a few ales, drinks… then she will be refreshed for the evening, off to beach or out for dinner etc…
Our daughter always akes up around 6-6:30am (as those are our working hours usualy & we are happy to get up then)The family are always up & out then anyways, We usually head down the beach, where she runs & runs & runs for a few hours & splashes then we eat & home, she sleeps we watch DVD’s & chill out, then we head out to visit friends etc in afternoon..
She usually goes off food as it’s so hot, but loves the Milo pre packed drinks & so the family have some stocked up for her when we arrive.
Plenty of suncream & you can get a Vaseline one that is moisturiser, suncream & insect repellant all in one… At restaurants etc, your child will be whisked away & entertained near by whilst you enjoy a peaceful meal….
It can be really hectic or really busy… Just plan enough days of resting so she won’t get cranky!!! Have fun!!!
Jodie, try Mata Hari,Kuta for the portable cot or
in Denpasar address Jalan Imam Bonjol 324 can remember the name of the shop Ph 62 361 486174.
Good luck.
