Taxis are an efficient way to get around in the tourist areas of Bali. My LP guides says that 'Metered taxis are common in Denpasar and the tourist areas of southern Bali. They're often a lot less hassle than haggling with bemo jockeys and charter drivers. It's best to order a taxi by phone, especially at night. The most reputable taxi agency is Bali Taxi (0361 701111), which uses distinctive blue vehicles. Drivers often speak reasonable English and won't argue about putting on the meter. Other taxis are Praja Taxi (0361 289090) or Ngurah Rai Airport Taxi (0361 724724). You'll hear them beep their horns at you if you walk anywhere around a tourist center.'
In my experience the best company is Bluebird which is based in Jakarta and has been around for 30 years (0361 701111). Ika told me the newer cars charge more than the older style cars, which in Bali I can believe. Make sure you have plenty of change, whatever company you use because basically they're all crooks and will tell you they don't have change while keeping the meter running.

G’Day Nick,
Agreed about bluebird being the best.
During the month of October when it is Ramadhan and the following Idul Fitri, there are a lot of domestic tourist in Bali thus causing traffic-jams galore.
The point I am making is that taxi drivers will invariably try and bargain a price with you rather than put on the meter.
Just stand your ground and if you can’t get YOUR price, then hail another taxi.
