Last week my mate Paul Callahan of Byron Bay Surfboards recomended a little place on Jalan Double Six called Taman Legian. I found it a few days ago and have been back 3 times. I describe it as a place that could be from 30 years ago. Family owned warung made from bamboo with tables and chairs set in a garden. The staff are friendly, humble and shy and the food is great. I had the grilled tuna twice and for 21,000rp ($2.60) I got a portion of rice, a pile of greens and a half pound slab of tuna in bbq sauce.
Its so peaceful here that twice I have been the only customer. I can imagine the land here being sold sometime to make a hotel, but for right now its the perfect low key surfer warung.
I had to use the restroom and my waitress, Made who I interviewed showed me around back and we passed through a shop where they were making drums and digeridoos. A whole little cottage industry going on right here with drums in various stages of construction. I said hello to the guys who glanced up and carried on working. If you want to buy a drum I’m sure you’ll get a better deal by coming here than shopping in Kuta.
The bathroom was a disaster and Made asked the local guy who was taking a shower to get out for a moment so this ‘bule’ ( foreigner ) could take a leak. A family of chicken ran around the place and pecked at some offering scattered on the ground.
In the parking lot this lady was taking care of her daughter who was napping. Her husband arrived and advised me to take my motorbike to the place I rent it for blessing.
If you are in Bali and want to experience something from 30 years ago, eat great food and support some nice people try Taman Legian, almost at the end of Jalan Double Six.

Great pictures. I am currently doing a project in Bali and it’s nice to have such a great collection of photos to work from. Please continue to take lots of pictures. THanks.
Hey Nick,
I hope you did get your bike blessed! With the riding, driving over there you need all the luck you can get hey.
Is there anything going on at the Bomb site? Does it appears tourism is picking up & would you say it is mostly Europeans, Aussies, Americans or Japanese there at the moment? Just a few questions & trust me the next 3 months & now 3 days will never go as fast I pray for. Long time since i saw my hubby!!!!!
Thanks ![]()
Hi Nick, another great write-up and you are cetainly covering the island to the benefit of all of us who yearn to be there!. I’ll definitely go to the Taman Legian Warung on Jl Double Six. My kind of place and it’s only the next street up from where I will be staying. I had a little laugh (nice one!) when I saw the Didgeredoos the Balinese lads were making. You have to admire their entrepeneurship. In fact the Digeredoos look better than most of our indigenous people make here in Oz!.
