Sustainable tourism development: Difficult in Bali

A Jakarta Post article today talks about the state of Bali's tourist industry and what can be done to make it sustainable in the long term. In my view people come to Bali for 3 main reasons: The weather, the culture, the surfing. Bali has a unique culture and is probably the single best surf destination in the world, all things considered. Add on to that the ease with which people can show up rent a cheap place and lounge while getting drunk, and you have a little tourism package.

The article talks about the development of tourist centers like Kuta, Lovina and Nusa Dua, their successes and failures. For sure the Kuta experience is entirely different form the Nusa Dua experience, but both have their place. Reading the article and looking at Bali tourism from a 10,000ft level I reckon the sun isn't going to stop shining, the waves will always be good and the Balinese have always shown a tremendous resilience when it comes to their culture. The big factors ill stay the same. The secondary factors are more worrying, pollution, over development, unplanned development, erosion of beaches and local corruption. I like the phrase 'tourism destroys tourism' and totally agree that if we're not careful we will kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

Bali is also a good place to so some serious jail time if you do drugs.

That macaroni-head Tony seems to be an expert on the subject of serious whoring in Bali. If that is the case, he should tell us more about it. C’mon, you pasta-head!, tell us all where to go for fun.

The reason while we are visiting Bali is:

The culture
The landscaping
The climate/sun
People are nice
and last but not least..It’s soo cheap.

But I’m not going to surf ;)

Hi Nick, you posted the wrong link to the Jakarta Post. This one talks about the shift from monetary to fiscal policy. Even though I found it quite interesting (and much related to my line of work), I was hopping you could post the one about the tourism industry in Bali.

The Jakarta Post constantly changes their links……it’s useless to try and link a story for more than 1 hour.
