On Tuesday afternoon I rode down to Kartika Plaza to check out the surf memorabilia display at Discovery Hotel on Jalan Kartika Plaza.
This display is located at the back of the hotel lobby and is free. It will be running for a while and you can stroll in without tickets and check it out.
On show were some of the early boards used in Bali and posters from the early surf competitions.
My favourite item was the first ever surf board used in Bali, owned by Bob Koke owner of the Kuta Beach Hotel in 1938. The board is made of Redwood and was shaped in Hawaii. It is very different in shape from all the other boards on show and even more odd looking when compared to todays models. The 1938 board is narrow and thin, where as the later boards tend to be wide and thick. I wonder how Bob did in the surf.

Hello Wombat, yeah the surf scene is very prevalent here and I’ll give it a shot sooner or later. Here’s a picture of my first surfing session.

G’Day Nick,
Great to see you interested in the surf scene. When do we get to see some fotos of you carving up the swells on a malibu?.
