Soccer: Asian Cup in full swing.

This summer we have had a virtual orgy of soccer. Don’t you love that word?

‘Soccer’ I mean. First there was Euro 2004 won by Greece, then Cupa America started and is down to the semis, now we have the Asian Cup and Indonesia is holding it own. Indo won a surprise victory over Qatar 2-1 a few days ago and sits on top of its group which includes China, Bahrain and Qatar. As I type its halftime in the Indo vs. China game with China leading 2-0. China are the hosts so you can expect them to be tough. If the boys from Java can hold it together against Bahrain they might squeak through.

The handy times of the games mean a visitor can watch them in a variety of bars and restaurants that have tv. Don’t be afraid to ask the bartender to turn off the Top 40 crap and turn on the soccer.

Come on Indo!!!

Several years ago we got talking with some quite skillful young soccer players practising on the beach not far from La Lucciola.

They told us that playing soccer was one of the few ways in which an ordinary young Balinese guy could aspire to becoming comfortably off and well known.

Indo lost 5-0 to hosts China and will have to get a draw against Bahrain to go through to the next round.

I’m worried for Indo. Bahrain tied with China ( = they are good too) and Indo were crushed by China. A draw might be asking too much.
