Showing Chris around Sanur Bali

Monday here in Kuta Chris and decided to take a ride on the motorbike to Sanur, the first resort area in Bali.

Living in Seminyak I didn’t want to go straight there and turn around. I chose a direction that would take us north towards Denpasar and around the back of the city, arching round and finishing in Sanur on the SE coast.

Our ride to Sanur took maybe 30 minutes including a pit stop at the gas station in Kerobokan for gas. Five thousand rupiah topped off my tank nicely.

I lent Chris a Dry Fit shirt as I was anticipating him sitting in the same position for and hour or more total. Actually it turned out to be slightly overcast which took the edge off the burning sun.

We had a scary moment heading into Sanur along the Bypass rd when a skinny dog came diagonally towards us from the sidewalk. It veered left and right and after a toot from me zoomed across our path and into the path of other vehicles. I didn’t panic but my pulse got going when I saw it heading straight for my front wheel.

Sanur beach was mostly empty of tourists. The largest group seemed to be a school party. Actually we were approached by 4 girls who asked for an interview. I obliged while Chris filmed with his video camera. After a brief get to know you they launched into the old ‘are you married, why not, when will you marry’ scenario. It was quite entertaining.

I can tell Sanur is an area that attracts mostly Europeans and is slightly upmarket. Right now they are hurting for business and I really hope Christmas brings in the crowds.

Returning to Kuta Chris and I went for some food at Warung 96 on Jl. Benesari. My phone rang and it was Erica ( we just can’t get rid of her ). I was into a conversation with 4 French and Spanish people who were on a quest to find Balinese handicrafts to ship home. Erica showed up and ordered a big ‘ol burger. I had a chicken pizza for 22,000rp and a couple of BaliHai’s with Chris.

My friend Anastasia took me to Paradiso Billiard & Bowling a few months ago and I suggested we take a hike down there for a hour or so. Its located down a narrow lane on Jl. Kartika Plaza across from Kuta Paradiso Hotel. The place is incredibly modern with huge tvs showing sports, a pizza parlour, bar, bowling alley and about 40 pool tables, all high quality. Someone has sunk a ton of money into this and the locals pack this place out. After selecting our table a little man came over with the cues and high quality balls. “Eight ball or nine ball?” he asked. I like this place!

We played for over an hour, Chris and I taking it in turns to team up with Erica playing eight ball. Erica’s team won on more than one occasion, I think it was her cool head that guided the team through. She actually said she’s a decent bowling player but we only had 1 pair of socks between us. I’m better at pool so didn’t look into the sock situation to deeply.

Our time cost 34,000rp and between 3 people was okay value. I’m trying not to go to this place other wise I’ll get addicted and spend my time off there. It is a cool place to spend and evening and close to Poppies Lane.

Hi Nick,
I love Bali and I really like your site.
I live near the beach south of Fremantle in Western Australia and this time of the year the weather is great here, but as soon as it starts to get cool, I’m wanting to be back in my second home, Bali.
Reading your comments stirs up all the nice thoughts about Bali and I hope the people you are trying to do business with realise what a favourable influence you are on Balinese tourism.
Thanks again and best wishes,
Rex

Loved the tale about visiting Sanur Beach, and the pics. Bali is one of my favourite holiday places [I am from Port Adelaide, South Australia] but I regret to say I haven’t been back since the Kuta bombings – not for that reason, but have just been travelling to other destinations in the past year.
Sanur is a lovely spot. The Mandara Spa at the Hotel Sanur Beach is THE BEST!

Sometimes an interesting forum but your
“report”on Sanur was NON EXISTANT! Could do with LESS of what you are wearing and what you had to eat and MORE on the people and places. I was most disappointed to open “Showing Chris around Sanur” to find absolutely NIL on this (my favourite area)of Bali.

G’Day Nick,

Disregard the negative comments made.

We all reckon you’re doing a fabulous job promoting Bali, and especially, sharing your daily activities with us all that can’t be in Bali at this time.

Keep up the gret work and the great Titles!.

Hi Tracey,

How did Gede survive the storm last night?!!!

Hey there Nick,

If you are getting tired of all the tourist hopping and you want to do some reporting to tweak a few social consciences, I can put you in touch with someone who will show you some Balinese orphanages. Don’t stop telling us what you are having to eat, its the part I look forward to most!!

Aloha Nick,

As far as I’m concerned, you can write about whatever you want.

In fact, it’s great to get the daily scoop from an expat rather than a “guidebook” style format. I can get that from a Lonely Planet at Borders Bookstore.

P.S. Are there still those hellacious stray dog fights on Jalan Benesari? I remember eating at Suka Beach and thinking they were going to rip each other to pieces. Scary!!!!!

Hey Nick,

Angie has a great idea. It would be interesting to read about the orphanages and the work being done and their future prospects. Another side of Bali away from the gloss and hype of tourism.

Good one Angie!

Hi Barrie,
Gede was safe in the storm… I took care of him, he said it reminded him of sitting in Bali at home eating pisang goreng watching the rain drinking hot teh!!!!
I was thinking of something different at the time & eventually he was on the same wave length….!!!

Angie, Excellent idea, it would be of interest to see how the Orphanages etc are run & kept running with volunteers & charities etc…
It would also give tourists ideas of place to go & things they could bring to help these charities & funds…

Nick,
We all think your a champ & I love looking at & reading about what you personally have done, thought, seen, eaten, drunk & with whom etc, it is really interesting!!!!!
Wish I was there to partake in some of the events with you…
