Showing a newcomer a good time in Bali- part IV

Ika and I once took a small lane through a rice field and talked to a family of Balinese people where every one of them, including the 80-year-old granny was wearing only a sarong at the waist. You don't see this kind of stuff on the main road, but its alive and kicking down the small lanes off of the road.

There are plenty of volcanoes you can hike for free without hassle including Gunung Agung, Abang, Catur, to name a few. There is some nice scenery and hiking around the Lake Tamblingan area, which I want to check out. For those who feel Bali just isn't big enough you can take a trip to Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida, or even take a 30-minute plane ride to Lombok, a different world altogether. I tell you we've got it all, its just a matter of getting to it.

Howard,

Your writing is incomprehensible. Are you on drug? Better stay out of Bali, matey.

From now on, anyone dumb enough to get caught with even 1 ECCK tablet deserves to be sent to jail just for being total Dumb Ass.

The rest of us, non druggie, should fear nothing.

That’s what I like about being able to travel, meeting new people and learning about new cultures. On my travels I’ve encountered many people from almost as many cultures. Keep up the exploring and more power to you!

Howard, I think most people aren’t happy that a young person could go to jail for a long time. People over here aren’t celebrating.

I know the laws on drugs in Indonesia are extememly harsh, there’s no ambiguity on that subject. It is also true that Michelle Leslie did do some things that put her in the situation she is in. She didn’t just wake up and find herself in jail.

If I drink a beer in California and get into a road accident where someone dies, I’m going to jail for many years. If I throw a bbq in Oregon and someone under 21 comes (even uninvited) and drinks, then goes and kills someone with a car, I’m going to jail.

Every place has its own rules and in Indonesia its drugs that gets them going.

INDONESIAN DRUG LAWS ARE NOT FAIR AND JUST
GETTING DRUNK AND KILLING SOME ONE=OK JAIL
BUT DO YOU ARREST PEOPLE IF THEY ARE DRUNK AND LOCK THEM UP FOR 5 -10 YEARS.
OF COURSE NOT.SAME PRINCIPLE

Hi Howard. People should know the laws of the country that they plan to visit. In Saudi Arabia you can not drink alcohol. Only in an Embassy is this allowed. I smoke Marijuana in Canada but I would not think of smoking it in the United States. If I get caught in Canada with a joint in my pocket the police will throw it away. In the U.S it is looked at alot more harshly. If you don’t like the laws of a country then don’t travel there. Bali was the most beutiful place I have seen, I would not let there laws influence my decision to travel there again. Marc

Nick, your rationization for the onerous drug laws in Indonesia is simply unexcuseable. Shame on you.

Howard,

Who are you to judge if a countries laws are fair or just or barbaric? The bottom line is that there are signs all over Bali, from the airport to bars etc advising of the harsh drug laws and No Tolerance to Drugs policy of the Indonesian Government. If you choose to go to another country, don’t expect to be judged according to the laws of your home country. People from different cultures could possibly find Australian laws as ridiculous as you find Indonesian Laws. It is extremely arrogant, not to mention ignorant to judge other countries and cultures laws as unjust or unfair not to mention barbaric.

you have to be an absolute IDIOT to take or use drugs in Bali

I have no sympathy for my fellow Australians who do this sort of stuff. they are simply asking for trouble - I hope Allah smites their asses.

Mat.
