Should the death penalty be given for drug traffickers?

Singapore will execute a 25 year old drug trafficker today. Nguyen Truong Van, an Australian, was caught with 400g’s of heroin on him at Canggi airport in 2002.

Singapore like many other SE Asian countries has a harsh view of drug trafficking and Nguyen Truong Van will be hung today. The story is surrounded with issues. Should the death penalty be given for non-violent crimes? Should it be given at all? Nguyen Truong Van didn’t care bout the people who would eventually use the heroin he carried. He claims he was running drugs to help his brother with debts, but people in jail say all kinds of things.

Australian Attorney-General Philip Ruddock branded his hanging “barbaric”. I wonder if the Australian public would offer a more passionate responce if he was a whitey. We’ll get to test that if the Bali Nine are given death. Its definitely not a happy moment when a 25 year old loses his life for a stupid decision, but at some point we have to take responsibility for our actions.

Well again, it is as simple as Tony said. It is absurd to kill someone over drugs. But eventhough i can feel very sorry for him and all that. But even if you are in a desperate situation, you don’t go to Singapore with drugs. If he was that desperate willing to commit suicide, he had better just shot himself.

Agree or not, one thing that can be said for the Singaporean government–they carry out their threats. White or not, it doesn’t matter; if their laws provide for caning, death, whatever, and you break those laws, then you know exactly what will happen as a result.

Fercrissakes, you run drugs, you accept the occupational hazards!! Otherwise teach English, drive a bus, go to med school….

Why is it absurd to execute someone for drug trafficking?

Is it absurd if the crime is murder? Or rape? Or shoplifting> The countries which have the death penalty have it because that’s what the populace residing there wants. Australia doesn’t, so they cry “barbarism”. Singapore, the USA, China, et al. do; so these people are all barbarians? Why? That’s what the majority of these people want. You commit a capital offence in these places, how can you then complain about what’s in store for you after you are caught and convicted?

That is whiner’s remorse–just like Corby. Hands up, please, anyone who thinks she’s innocent after the recent revelations about her consorting with hydroponic pot growers. Geeeeez.

Well, it’s not a question wether it’s barbaric or not. The question is: does death penalty and lower crime rates go together. The answer is: they don’t. Statistics all over the world show that countries with deathpenalty have higher crime ratings. Why? Because if you broke a law killing people, or whatever( danger of getting executed ) you will defend yourself more and heavier, using heavier arms. So you get more and worse criminal facts. And a weapon-loving countrie like the usa with a rifle association… gives a good example of what i mean.
Singapore is the only place with different surrounding factors. It’s a very big city, but there are gradually less poor people, and many criminals executed come from outside Singapore.

Yes the US should execute all drug traffickers including those that are United States Citizens live on World Wide Television and the way to do that is by firing squad. Hey whinos Drug Trafficking isn’t a low crime it is a high crime. If we the US decides to institute the Death Penalty for all drug traffickers we would become the 2nd nation in the Northern World to institue the death penalty just after communist cuba.

Yeah, kill ‘em, but kill the tobacco merchants of death, the booze manufacturers, the gambling casino tycoons, and all the millions of doctors worldwide who get their patients addicted to Oxycontin, Prozac, Xanax, Librium, Valium, uppers, downers and more.

It reeks of hypocrisy, and it’s a little political, to boot.

By the way, how are the waves down there?

Drug trafficking or any other act other than that of a brutal murder should NOT have the death penalty sentenced for. Capital punishment in brutal murders is only used as revenge anyway, there is not deterrent factor in it.

Drugs destroy lifes , they cause profound social damage , wreck families and nations. The Death penalty must be compulsory and mandatory for drug lords and traffickers. The death penalty is a fitting penalty for those life wreckers and merchants of death. Think about the pain and suffering of drug addicts and their families. As for drug addicts ,they become derelicts and losers ; their lifes are ruined.
