There is a much greater security presence now both on the roads, where we saw some awesome mass licence checks, and on entry to supermarkets, bars and restaurants; although it is not particularly overt except along the beachfront venues and never bothered us.
Actually the beachfront guards and their torches come in very handy when you're stumbling from bar to bar along the sand. Security is even tighter at the airport, so be prepared to open every single bag before check-in on departure; particularly, don't put cable ties on your zips or have your bags security wrapped, you will just have to cut it all off again and then stand there while smart-arsed people like me giggle at you.
We booked this trip in March and I never hesitated in my decision to go to Bali again. My last trip was in 2002 at the time of the first bombing and I was determined to return regardless. I saw a t-shirt in a stall in Kuta which summed up my feelings exactly, but I think the language may be a bit much for public repetition, so use your imagination.
