Sharyn’s trip to Bali – November 2005: Jewelry

Sharyn gives some handy tips on where to buy silver jewelry in Bali.

I bought most of my jewellery from a silversmith in Ubud, which is always the best bet, although I did risk a few street purchases which have yet to turn my ears black-so maybe I got lucky; BTW weight is usually the best indicator when buying silver on the street. I also bought a great ring (bling bling!) at Kevin Silver on Jl Legian (up near Jl Benesari somewhere-it was the end of a long day)-but I am withholding final judgement until it stands the test of time.

Anybody wanting to buy silver I suggest that if you head up to Celuk, then head down the gangs and meet some of the local craftsmen. It is in these places that you find the top quality work and at good prices and less than you would buy at the upmarket shops.

I never buy silver, but, going bt wight seems a strange way to gauge if its pure silver. Generally look for the marking and in general, most silver you buy on the steets (with the exception of a few pirates!) is 92.9 or bigger.

Actually weight IS a damn good way of assessing if what you are looking at is actually solid silver or just brass which has been silver plated — very common with earrings — hence the ears turning black issue
