Sharyn's trip to Bali - November 2005: Cafes & Restaurants part I

We tried all ends of the spectrum (excluding road-side vendors naturally) with mostly excellent results. As mentioned above, our hotel had great pizza and a pretty damn good breakfast. I had a great steak at Gado-Gado and my friend had an excellent seafood curry, I was impressed by the wine list-probably the best selection I found. Although, as with most places in Bali, order your steak here a little more rare than you normally would.

We ate twice at Maccaroni on JL Legian, which should tell you everything. We have voted their prawn cocktails the best ever and the swordfish steak is superb. This is a great place for a long long dinner as the bar is equally good – one day I will get to the end of that cocktail list. If, like me, 40 degree weather makes you crave winter food, try Yut's on Rum Jungle Road. Why Bavarian restaurants flourish in Bali is beyond me-but I'm not going to argue, I had sausages and mash with mustard and a big smile on my face. Mama's on Jl Legian is also apparently still going strong late into the night, but we didn't make it there this time.
