Shark attack Bali: Will it happen to you?

Bali is located 8 degrees south of the equator. The currents around this island are very strong and the ocean generates swells that create the perfect environment for surfing. So you might wonder is Bali prone to shark attacks? Judging by the man hours spents in the water by foreign surfers, and more importantly local surfers, I think the answer is no. That’s not to say sharks don’t live here, but since I have been in Bali, I haven’t heard of anyone being attacked.

Some of my surfing mates talk of seeing a 10 ft shark go past them at the airport, or out at Nusa Dua. The Lombok Strait is 1300m deep and is a breeding ground for Tiger sharks.

Back in 1993 I remember walking along the main fishing beach in Padangbai and seeing a local woman carrying a 3ft long sharp on her head. That’s some good eatin’.

Airport lefts is supposed to be a bit ’sharky’. Not that I know, the closest I’ve been to airport lefts is the Duty Free shop inside the airport.

Once I and Hengky dived at Gili Selang, the easternmost part of Bali, we met with school of 8 hammerhead sharks. We were quite nervous but they just swam passing us. In fact since then I dived there a lot but never seen any single hammerhead sharks. Read the trip story here http://www.kapalselam.org/trips1.html

im a local here in bali, and im a surfer. yeah sharks are not uncommon in the deep waters around bali. but appart from divers and fisherman people dont usually see them. you do occasionally here of a surfer seeing a shark at the outer reef breaks, but all my life here ive never heard of anyone ever being attacked here.

I have visited Bali some 18 times over 3 decades and have on one occasion only (Kuta beach) seen a huge shark early one morning. The water was very clear and at the base of a wave you could clearly see a very large shark some 12 feet or more long with the classic vertical bars swimming along the wave. I was with a group of people including several Balinese who saw this monster. I did not swim there for a couple of days.

I put it down as a tiger shark as I have dived on the outer barrier reef and been very close to one…the other time occurred some 20 kms out from Darwin harbour and a very large tiger shark took a vey keen interest in my boat….there is no mistaking tiger sharks.

The only other time I have seen sharks around Bali was during a wall dive off Menjangan Island on the north side of Bali…these were only smallish reef sharks about 4 feet in length and very timid. I have asked the local Balinese surfers about sharks and shark attacks but only got conflicting stories.

But I know what I saw that day!
