This Sunday morning I was dozing a bit late when I heard someone calling out ‘Nick, hello Nick’. Looking out the window I saw it was Patrice, the fellow from France who collects Balinese figurines. He has moved to Singaraja with his wife and new son and was in Seminyak to try to sell some of his artifacts.
My friend Oliver ( also from France ) is an acquaintance of Patrice and might buy an item or 2. Patrice wants to make web site calling like-minded people together to create a commune in the mountains where they will learn how to communicate by telepathy. He feels that modern society will turn into a situation where a few powerful people create machines and the rest of us are slaves to the machines…Patrice you ought to lay off the smoke when you watch Terminator 3!
Anyway he gave me his latest view of the world ( basically we’re all doomed and need to go back to nature….[except for coffee breaks to Cafe Moka]).
After Patrice left I zoomed over to Café Moka for a croissant and coffee and read the latest world news. Stories of human rights abuses are leaking out of Aceh where 40,000 Indonesian military are looking for 5,000 GAM freedom fighters…wouldn’t like to be in their shoes right now. The freedom of the press is severely restricted up there and you can expect to hear about Bosnia like crimes when this is all over.
I wanted to get out of Seminyak of a few hours so got on my bike and headed to a secret location on the coast. Oliver told me about a beach that is beautiful and totally deserted. It took me a while but I found it. Paradise or not?
I forgot to bring my swimming gear, next time I’ll remember. These 2 local guys were happy to show me the trails in the area and hang out.
The lesser-populated parts of the south coast are a pleasure to explore and I’ll happily take anyone who comes to Bali on a little tour.
I stopped at this roadside place for an Teh Bottle (iced-tea ) and talked to Kadek who was operating this family run business on Sunday.
Over the road a small group of kids were playing with their grandad, or whoever he was under a little shelter.
I also heard then saw this Garuda jet fly overhead on its way out of the island.
On the way home I stopped at Internet Outpost and saw Barrie who was hard at work writing up my interview (poor guy ). That’s what happens when you hand someone a voice recorder, they can’t stop talking.

We’ll take you up on that offer of a tour of the quieter parts of Bali when we visit in Nov!
Great report Nick - We just got back from a weekend of camping here in Vancouver, Canada and it’s great to read how others are spending their weekend…
Keep on blogging,
Duncan & Sarah
There are some great places on this island that most visitors never see its amazing. With a motorbike and a little effort you can escape the tourism scene totally and see the Bali you imagine.
These out-of-the-way, non-tourist spots are gems.
Stupid communist.
Sounds like a great relaxing Sunday.
