Schapelle Corby verdict not affecting Bali tourism

Don't blame it on the sunshine
Don't blame it on the airline
Don't blame it on the Bali Nine
Blame it on the boogie

Its now 3 weeks since the Schapelle Corby verdict and after the emotionally fueled outbursts, and proclamations things are calmed down. A few travel agents in Australia steadfastly said they would never sell trips to Bali again but judging by the recent arrival figures it won't matter.

Garuda Indonesia has added another flight from Sydney and the current exchange rate makes those great Bali prices seem even more attractive.

As of today the exchange rate is:

1.00 AUD Australia Dollars = 7,440.44 IDR Indonesia Rupiahs

1.0 USD United States Dollars = 9,634.49 IDR Indonesia Rupiahs

1.00EUR Euro = 11,664.15 IDR Indonesia Rupiahs

I think Bali and Australia have a special relationship, many friendships are long lasting and as Australia's #1 tourist destination it would be a shame if people boycotted for emotional reasons. If I drew up a list of things some of my favourite countries, and listed all the nasty things they do, I wouldn't have many places left to go. Now that an Aussie dollar buys a Bintang I reckon its time to enjoy it.

Tourists will continue to go to Bali. It’s relatively cheap.

G’Day Nick,

In all, Aussies are pretty forgiving bunch. Irregardless of their opinions about the Corby hoo-ha, it is still the cheapest destination in town for them. At least here in West Australia it is.
You only have to look in the travel sections of any local paper to see the super-specials. West Australians are the biggest visitors to Bali and have been for decades. Shit, it’s only a 3 and a half hour flight from Perth to Bali!.

But, you are correct Nick in what you wrote regarding friendships forged between Aussies and Indos. They are strong and remain strong no matter what.

Great addition with the exchange rate mate. Very helpful for those on the verge of arriving on paradise isle.

I feel so sorry for Schapelle Corby and I hope, that she will go back to Australia free or with reduced sentence. But, if she will cannot escape from this heell, then will be better when she will die as soon as possible. Death is better than “life” in Kerobokan hell. I hope that she will soon either free or dead. A matter of course better be, than she will escape alive from hell.

Hi Barrie and Nick, it’s good to learn the Indonesian Govt has granted additional VOA (visa on arrival) to 14 countries. Europeans in Feb & March 2005 are still the main tourists in Bali followed by Japan, Australia and Taiwan in that order. Small numbers of Corby’s emotional supporters probably didn’t realise Australia represents only the 3rd largest tourists in Bali and their possible boycott wouldn’t have such a dramatic impact on Bali tourism. Any idea how much is the percentage of tourism in Indonesia Nat’l Income?
