Schapelle Corby has asked for a pardon from the Indonesian President. An article in the Sunday Telegraph says that the President grants several pardons a year and that many of these have been to foreigners on long sentences. The article also says that sources close to Schapelle say she thinks she will be going home after May 27th, the day of judgement.
When I visited Schapelle in Kerobokan jail last week she seemed upbeat, tanned and healthy. Many news sources reckon she will be found guilty and point to the fact that in Australia it would very likely be a single judge, not 3 who would decide her fate. They also point out that much of her defense evidence is actually hearsay that would not even be admitted as evidence. In Indonesia hearsay is allowed as evidence for the judges to consider.
When I visited Kerobokan jail the Australian Consul was there too and I am sure he is at the jail everyday or so informing her of the governments situation. The Australian government is working hard on a prisoner transfer treaty that could see Schapelle transferred to a womens prison in Brisbane.
A whole rainbow of situations is possible on Friday including a not guilty verdict, a pardon, a short sentence, a long sentence with immediate transfer to Australia, or a sentence served in Bali followed by the remainder in Australia. I predict the court will find her guilty and sentence her to a long term in jail. Excepting a pardon, she will probably serve a short term here before going home.
