Schapelle Corby fires lawyers in Kerobokan Bali

The legal team who defended convicted drug trafficker Schapelle Corby has been fired. A new law firm has been hired by the family, which is headed by Walter Tonetto, a German lawyer based in Indonesia. One can sense frustration on both sides, Schapelle because things are maybe not moving fast enough and the Bali team because they were up against it, with no counter evidence.

Dodgy Ron Bakir is also out of the picture and is free to go back to flogging mobile phones on the Gold Coast. Now he is a household name across Australia any further ventures he does will be sure to attract free publicity.

Locally here in Bali I have heard nothing about the Corby case. Various expats including Aussies have given me their view of the case and surprisingly a majority of them think she's guilty. Hearsay is just that, and I don't make any final conclusion. I think the appeal will definitely fail and could result in a heavier sentence. Let's hope the prisoner exchange deal can be arranged so Schapelle can go home and have some kind of future.

Well, here’s some good news for Tommy Suharto! Maybe the Corby family should hire Tommy’s legal team. Who says Indonesian justice is corrupt?

Sentence Reduced for Suharto’s Son

Indonesia’s Supreme Court has reduced a jail sentence for the youngest son of ex-dictator Suharto to 10 years from 15 for ordering the assassination of a judge, an official said.

Hutomo “Tommy” Mandala Putra had asked the court to review a July 2002 ruling by the Central Jakarta District Court, which sentenced him for orchestrating the killing of Supreme Court Justice Syaifudin Kartasasmita.

Chan,

It is ridiculous to reduce a sentence for killing a Supreme Court Judge. That crime says he does not care about the law at all. The new sentence says the court is not serious about bringing him to justice.

Beryl,

Interesting comments. I don’t have any answers for you, but it is certinly food for thought.

The Soeharto family money at work. Tommy was good for one thing though - He set up a damn good airline!.

I’ll be glad when the Corby Circus is over. It’s all I ever seem to hear, read and see in the media constantly.

Kunjaya, I saw no reason to even try with you. Just the same old Indonesian racist xenophobic blathering blaming Chinese for your own peoples and leaders corruption. You know, there’s a reason Indonesia is on the bottom in Asia. Keep dreaming and blaming others. Meanwhile your country is the laughingstock of Asia……does it feel good down there?

look who’s racist now? I expect a rational argument based on data, not just an argument based on hatred…
seems you’ve been driven by your anger, it’s alright anyway :)

yeah my country is on the bottom in Asia, that’s why I’d like to go back as soon as possible to teach in the university there, better than working in a european university like I do rightnow even though the payment is so low and uncomparable with what I have today… and look who’s migrate to other country leaving their own poor rural village fellows in china with revenue less than 1 euro per day. Look down to other country and feel you’re higher than most of other asian people just because you hold your australian citizenship eh? I smell parasite…:)

Chan, I give you some facts here:
population living with less than 1 US$ in Indonesia in 2004 is 7.5% which means 16,695,285 people. while in China in 2004 is 16.6% which means 218,009,294 people.. or 13 times higher than Indonesia!!!

how about other individual welfare indicators? alright I pick illiterate adults:
in Indonesia 2005 is about 7.62% or about 16,959,200 people… while in China 2005 is about 9.28% or 121,820,200 people, or more than 17 times higher than Indonesia!!!

From actual figures and percentages the individual welfare in China is much much lower than in Indonesia…I admit that my country is in the bottom in Asia, but surely not in the LOWEST PLACE…

Hellooo Chan? I hope you don’t run away this time :)

oyeah Chan, one more thing:
some of my students here are from people republic of china. They barely speak French and don’t speak English as well. They got their scholarship because French government, as other western governments, looks at PRC as a big market so they want to have a good relationship. It’s REALLY frustating me sometimes in dealing with them. However, you don’t have to be so worry because they are in the right hand, since I’m not a racist I treat them calmly and nicely so they hopefully can get their master degree on time. I like them because they work very hard…

Poor ignorant Kunjaya and your pitiful statistics. Why should I want or need an Australian passport? I am Taiwanese and we pay college Indonesian women to work as maids paying them more in one month than you’ll make in a year. Have fun pushing your bakso cart. Hahahaha!

Chan, you just reveal who you truly are…so sad, couldn’t give any rational fact-based opinion?… but even with a country with so many poor people like PRC you still have to beg for your life :) without USA you’re nothing, but I don’t enjoy what’s happened in Jakarta during 98 as I don’t praise Japanese for what they did in Nanking to your ancestors…

This blog read by so many people from many countries… you just showed them how a Taiwanese can respond to an Indonesian…couldn’t be smarter than that? But I don’t believe you’re a Taiwanese as you said, I just believe you’re somebody full of rage having bad experience in 98 or having ancestors in Nanking during that time… and couldn’t give any fact-based explanation just show me and other people here your level… happily I have many chinese friends that are not like you :)
