SBY fights corruption, while old cronies complain

Indonesian President SBY has a massive task fighting corruption. Part of the problem is that corruption was / is so endemic in Indonesia that so many high ranking people were / are involved. If you lock up everyone, you have no one left to work with.

SBY has tried to put the out and out criminals in jail, while focusing on the future and attempting to reach compromise with others. This has met with some hostility, particularly from some of the old cronies of previous governments, including former President Wahid. He thinks that SBY’s anti-corruption campaign is politically motivated and SBY seeks to jail Megawati’s husband Taufik. Megawati was a pretty useless President and her businessman husband is rumored to have scored deals because of her position (where have we heard that before, Glora Arroyo?).

Its no secret that SBY is close to the old Suharto crew, but they are out of power and we have a lot of current stuff to deal with. I give SBY the nod to carry on and not be stressed about the ‘beltway gossip’.
