Sawah to Villas in Seminyak Bali

Sawah or rice fields have always been a part of Balinese life but in recent years a new crop has started to take over in the sawah.

A foreign import called villas seems to grow well here in Seminyak and a ride through my neighborhood reveals.

The Balinese in this area still go about their daily chores and rituals and people who are farmers will probably always be. With more and more people moving to Bali and desiring to live outside Kuta but close to the newer cooler areas of Seminyak and Kerobokan expect to see more villas and less sawah.

I had lunch at the Hard Rock Hotel today with one of their managers. I must say they have the most impressive swimming pool I have yet seen in Bali, the thing is simply massive and has its own ‘sandy beach’ which was imported from Thailand.

With tourism down for the time being I wanted to snap a few of the locals passing away the time in the Poppies Lane area. Reading seems to be a universal pastime whether it be a newspaper or a magazine. Playing with the kids is brought to new levels here in Asia where people are out on the street and love to touch other people’s kids.

Vendors give that friendly welcome to anyone who glances their way and others are just waiting for a friend.

This Satpam, or security guard is doing a fine job of guarding his co worker.

For those familiar with the Kuta area the Brasil restaurant is once again in its old location, this employee doing the afternoon chore of watering down the street to stop the dust from getting out of hand.

The staff at Internet Outpost were looking pretty serious and things went smoothly today as far as connection speeds. One fixture in this internet café is Sam from Slovenia who uses the same spot everyday.

Towards the end of the day I walked down Pantai Kuta from Benesari and snapped the sunset. This beach vendor was heading home and tried a last sales pitch on me. These taxi drivers were taking a break, something they seem to do a lot these days.

Wow, gorgeous sunset!

A friend and I are planning on coming to Bali the first week of December. We want to stay in Ubud, and started to look at hotels on the internet. There are so many it is overwhelming.

Any you recommend? Private bathroom and shower are preferred…two beds. I checked the hotels section of the site, but didn’t find anything on Ubud…

thanks!

Nick,
Simply perfect!!! I really enjoyed seeing all the gorgeous smiling faces in Bali. I think that is one of the reasons I initially fell in lobve with the place! People in the West go about their days in such a hurried manner never a time to stop, smile or simply say Hello!
Balinese will smile no matter how bad things are for them….. I hope the WEST does not change Gede too much!!!!
I will be happy to come home each day to a happy smiling hubby!!!!
SOON!!!!!
Have fun & keep blogging!!!
Bazza…. what do ou need AC for???
Send some heat down to Melb!!!!

G’Day Nick,

Stunning!. The only way to describe that sunset.

The ‘villa scene’ seems to be on the increase more and more. It won’t be long and yo will see a coastline of villas up to Tanah Lot and beyond.

Nice B&W fotos Nick. Sam has moved places!. He usualy sits on the opposite side so that he faces the entrance to the Outpost. Say hello to him for me.

Tracey,

Need the AC here in the West. It’s such an arid heat. Don’t forget, we cop the winds direct off the desert (if you can call the Nulla that!). Anyway, the heat’s coming your way. We have a nice cool 32c today and is a much needed respite from yesterday. BUT, I still yearn for the tropical heat of Bali. Don’t know how Candika will cope the Indian summer when she comes.

Nick,

Sam must never leave the Outpost. He was in the same spot when I left.

Nice to hear from everyone.

The heat is back in Bali for sure, very steamy. Last night in fact I good a good example of how hot it is. I was visiting one of the shops in Kuta where I had given t-shirts out and 1 one staff had bought bakso, a spict noddle soup with chicken balls. This one girl added a tablespoon of sambal ( chili sauce) and started eating it. I tried it and it was very spicy indeed. After about 5 minutes this girl was perspiring as if in a sauna, literally sweat was dripping of her…but still refused to stop until the soup was finished.

I joked with Sam the other day that the chair he sits in is now like a seat in a formula 1 racing car, it only fits him now.
