Riding to Sukawati Bali

farmer090505.jpgThe road heading to Sukawati was totally untoursity and consisted of a series of winding bends, at first running along the crest of a valley wall, then descending and running through fields. I saw rice fields that had been harvested and the remains burned, readying the fields for the next cycle. All across Indonesia the burning of straw and bush goes on and it is a big concern for the future. The distance from the waterfall at Tegehungan to Sukawati is only 3 kilometers and passes though some pretty country. During my ride I was still sweating from walking up the hill at the waterfall and was wearing onlty a t-shirt. This time of year you are okay during the day riding with just a t-shirt but later at night you might want to think about a jacket.

burn090605.jpgRiding across the fertile fields towards Sukawati I saw locals tending large crops of brightly colored flowers. These no doubt were to be used in making offerings and I saw on guy with a giant bundle of leaves destined for the same purpose. I stopped and said hello, trying to keep the words flowing while I retrieved my camera from the depths of my bag, opened it, set the flash, focused and waited for the thing to go off. Everyone is the countryside seems to be carrying a curved machette, whether 5 years old or 85 years old.

Nick,

Haven’t written in a while. Been busy travelling! (I moved from Honolulu to Paris a few months ago…)

Anyway, what’s the &^%$*() deal with the random drug testing of tourists at Bali nightclubs.

This has to be, in my opinion, the worst idea I’ve heard in a long, long, long time.

Are they trying to get tourists to go to Thailand instead?

Is this not completely ridiculous. I’m at a loss for words right now.

Who’s going to want to go anywhere - even if they’ve never taken drugs - if they’re subject to a privacy invasion like this?

The Bali police chief says it is not going to happen. I heard a report recently from an Aussie woman who was in Paddy’s went the cops came in. They hauled over a bunch of locals and left the bules alone.

The only way to be totally safe is to leave the drugs to other people. I’m never worried about going out because I don’t buy drugs. If they harrass foreingers people will definitely start looking elsewhere.

The random drug tests are just a rumor. BUT if one is arrested on suspicion of a drug offence, the authorities WILL drug test you regardless of your consent.

So keep clean especially if you hang out in the usual suspect places….
