Poppies I has seen some development over the last year with a multi-storey hotel being built at the junction of Pasar Agung and Poppies I. A walk through to Poppies II will give you even more idea of the reconstructions going on around here. The old banjar cock-fighting pit is gone and is a pile of rubble, Jus Edith Bungalow, the trusty 20,000rp a night place has collapsed half their bungalows and are building new ones. Even the fish pond in the back of Bamboo Corner has been paved over in favor of a table and chairs. Progress is not always pretty and I hope that after the new places are finished Poppies I does not look like Beirut 1980 anymore. A new development between Poppies I & II promises luxury apartments for lease or sale. Will be great when they are finished.
The attraction of Poppies I for anyone who has not stayed here is a selection of budget places to stay, art market type shopping, a few surf shops and a good assortment of budget bars and restaurants. Originally a sandy track that joined Jl. Legian to the beach this narrow street means you can stoll to the surf.

I can’t imagine a Bali-less year. I have been going to Bali 2 times a year, religiously since the 80s. I can’t really explain why. I have been to Kalimantan before, and saying goes that once you drink water from Mahakam river, you’ll want to come back. Well, I did came back. Once.
As for Bali, I do not need to drink any water from any river. The thought of tasty nasi-jenggo at junction before Kuta Square, and smell of air at Geger beach are enough to have me packed and ready for another Bali trip.
I was in Bali last month. But today I already miss the followings: burgundy beef-croissant at Le Bake, gulai ayam at ACC Minang Tuban, nasi campur at Murni Ubud, chicken curry at Bebek Bengil. And also the complimentary welcome drink at Conrad Benoa…

I was up in Bali last month, staying at Hard Rock and enjoying the nightlife of Seminyak and Kuta. Going back from Mbargo at 3 in the morning, walking through Poppies, I saw a new development of Apartments for Sale in Poppies lane. Can anyone provide me with the sales contact? I’m really interested in getting a nice apartment in Bali, specially in Kuta! Thanks!
G’Day Nick,
I was really pissed off when they squashed the cockfighting. The last time I went there it was with Josh. But I am pleased to read they are cleaning up PL1.
I’m trying to imagine just where they would erect these luxury apartments in Gang Ronta?. That gang is what I call ‘highway hell’ - if the dog shit don’t get you or the drains, then the motorbikes definitely well!.
