Renae Lawrence sentenced to life in Bali

Bali Nine drug trafficker Renae Lawrence was today found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment. Prosecutors recommended at 20 year jail term, but the 3 judges at Denpasar District Court took no notice.

Renae had co operated with investigators and had told her side of the story of how she became involved. The only fly in the ointment was the fact that she had been to Bali twice before with Andrew Chan, negating any chance that she didn’t know what was going on.

I did not attend the verdict and think her lawyers will appeal, after the other verdicts have been handed out. Its a sobering thought that a 28 year old will spend the rest of her life in a cage. One would hope that there would be an alternative solution (and I don’t mean death). My attitude is live and let live. Deal out some punishment then work on rehabilitation.

“Deal out some punishment then work on rehabilitation.”
Not the Indonesian way, Nick..unfortunately..nor the American way, the Aussie way..etc etc.
Now, under the circumstances…is ‘life’ better than death?

life..long time…very sad for the parents..
still…the warning signs were there for all to read and accept…or ignore…
they chose to ignore, and for lawrence..she had ignored the signs on her earlier run.

doesn’t look good for the rest…

She deserves everything she got. Skag kills thousands each year and Australians have been repeatedly warned against drug traffiking in Asia. How stupid do you have to be to ignore the hundreds of drug-warnings posted all over South East Asia? The liberals in Australia need to wake up. Asia has a massive drugs problems and only by dealing with scum like this in the harshest possible way will they ever deter it - like Singapore. They are approaching zero-tolerance and they are right. Why should their countries be used as revolving pharmacies by low-class Australians who want to roll the dice and then expect pity when they’re caught? How much pity does the dying junkie get? Let her rot in jail is what I say and let her be a cautionary tale for other scumbags who want to get-rich-quick on the backs of the suffering and death of others.

I am Australian. What were the Bali 9 doing when word first came back about Corby being held in a filthy prison cell? They probably didn’t give a toss then about Schapelle. They are greedy self-absorbed individuals who only now, in a 3rd world prison, realise what a privilege it is to be an Australian citizen. They’ll probably be released in about 10 yrs, but it will be tough. I feel some sympathy for their predicament.

And now there’s two sentenced to death by shooting … what a terrible waste, and a blasphemy that blood should be spilled on Bali’s beaches

I fell sorry for Renae, it’s a terrible thing to be in a strange part of the world and if threats were carried out on her family, she probably thought she was going to save them. I hope she remains strong.

Relax Anne they don’t shoot the scumbags on the beach…pitty, I would take along a slab of beer and enjoy the show…better they die than someone who sticks the heroin that these (for want of a better word) idiots were trying to bring back to Australia with the potential to harm so many more lives than just these pathetic morons..and life means life

karma has been delt with today an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth ,i have lost 2 friends in 1 year due to heroine overdoses so this should be a lesson to all idiots who just want to fill their pockets with easy cash…..easy sometimes but this time they got caught how about the other times ?

Spending time in prison must surely be a fate worse than death but spending it in an Indonesian jail is way past anything imaginable. However, traffickers know the risks they are taking and yet they still take the chance. It is, I think, the “it’ll never happen to me” mentality. In South Africa we see the result of lax laws all the time. Child rape, murder and drugs sold openly on the streets and in schools, corruption everywhere, and the long arm of the law is very short because cops don’t have a strong judicial system to back them. And in many instances the cops are themselves corrupt. Indonesia, Malaysia and Muslim countries have the right idea when they say they won’t tolerate crime of any sort. People who break the law must be held accountable and pay the price. Being soft on criminals only benefits the criminals and most of them are beyond redemption - especially in South Africa where they are literally getting away with murder. Put criminals where they belong - in jail for a very long time. Let the punishment fit the crime.

Aren’t you guys exaggerating? Do you come from the dark ages where people watched hangings? The world never changes. And dont we all try to get rich quick; at least we’d want to, we only dont admit it.
They should have known what they were doing; but shooting somebody for being stupid??
And i care less about the drugaddicts, they are even more stupid to start taking drugs.
Alcohol is a harddrug aswell and that seems to be no problem, for wich i’m glad. couldn’t imagine a world without beer and wisky.
