Register your cell phone in Bali

Pre-paid cell phones must be ‘registered’ by April 28th or the provider will block your number.

The cell phone system here in Bali is very good, you buy a cheap phone, get a SIM card, buy pulsa and off you go. You only get charged for the calls / SMS’s you make and if you run out of pulsa, you can still receive calls. The Indo government wants more control of the whole thing and is forcing people to give their details, or be shut off the system.

Ika has registered her phone and its a 7 step process. You call up, answer a question, them they call you back. Most people will give false details, (Name, address etc. ) and I will get Ika to call them up, and tell them a load of bollocks tomorrow. Last thing I need, is more Indo government officials knowing anything about me.

Presumably terrorism is one of the reasons they are doing this, with JI using cell phones to execute their attacks. If the government is serious about that they should insist GPS’s are built into each cell phone, then they’ll be able to track the buggers. You think Amrozi is going to tell you where he lives?

For those who haven’t registered, here’s some info.

Register your cell phone in Bali

Cell phones are one of the most handy inventions of the last 20 years. No more waiting for friends, missing dates or leaving people wondering where you are. I love the system in Bali where I can pre-paid phone cards and use them with my hand phone.

A new law coming into lpay means that all users of pre-paid phone cards will have to register their cell phones. Is this Big Brother? Did SBY buy into GW’s idea of a brave new world on his last trip to the US? The reason given is its helps prevent terrorism and fraud. Here in the US most of the phones are on some monthly plan, where you get charged up the ying yang for incoming calls and end up with a huge bill. They have started introducing phones cards but for people living in Bali its already the way to go.

At Bintang supermarket I buy 100,000rp of credit that lasts about 6 weeks. I was able to take my phone to Australia, buy a new SIM card and have basically a new phone.

The US will start requiring all cell phones to have a GPS inside so that the government will be able to know exactly where a person is. That’s a scary prospect. In Bali the cops don’t even have radios so they are a long ways off from being able to use technology to track people. Maybe this registration is a good thing if its stops some of the SMS spam I get.

The cheapest way to call overseas from Bali is to use someone else’s cell phone. Outside of that the cheapest way is to buy pre-paid phone cars that can be used on a land line. You get these from the post office and some Circle K’s.
