Preparing another bbq in Seminyak Bali

It sunday here in Seminyak Bali and I have been busy getting ready for a bbq.

This morning I rode down to Jimbaran and picked up 4 kilos of tuna for 51,000rp. The fish market there has all kinds of local fish ranging from mackeral, snapper, tuna, barracuda, shrimp and squid.

Riding to the market from Kuta takes about 20 minutes and I get off after the FedEx sign on the Bypass, cross over a couple of streets and ride 2 minutes to the end of the beach.

I have cut the fish into steaks and they are in my fridge in lemon and garlic. While I was chopping away on my counter the local fly population came to visit and I had to work quickly. The fish heads are in a separate bag in the freezer for Wayan to make soup with. I will pick up some chicken from Bintang later too. The time is 2.40pm right now and people will start arriving at around 6pm. I am expecting a small turnout with mainly Palu and the crew plus other stragglers.

Yesterday was Tumpek Landep here in Bali, the festival of blessing metal objects. People bless cars and motorbikes and splash holy water over their computers too. I offered my motorbike a few splashes in case it will do me some good.

Last night in the Seminyak neighborhood I rode around some of the smaller streets nad locals were busy holding ceremonies in temples and out of my gang came a procession of people carrying the tall umbrellas, the women singing. I had to pull over to let them pass.

Finishing up last minute details (getting ice, making salad, buying napkins etc.) and will report on the evening tomorrow. This will be my first bbq with the new lava rocks, let’s see if they make things easier.

Good input Nick as ever. Well just an update from London mate. I was reading your comment on London Blog re- Euro Championship fever and pubs/promos beer etc - Well Nick i dont know if you watched the England - France game mate,
but what a downer. 1 - 0 up at full -time and France score twice in injury time. Mr Vocabulary himself….hint hint
man of the famous ‘you know’ , yes you guess Mr Beckham misses a penalty when we are one up……could the miss end up beeing so costly…well yes it did as France toiled away and eventually won the game. Nick it is amazing how the atmosphere changed in the pub i was watching the game up the West End….one minute packed to the Rafters with boozed up punters chanting Ennngerlaaand Engerrland…..the next silence as they grabbed an equalizer and just a minute later complete silence and a blank stunned look in every ones face as they snatched the game from the jaws of the bulldog in the last breath of the game. Somehow i could sense that things had just gone to well for England and that the beer swilling boozed up crowd dancing about in the corner of the pub chanting ‘were gonna win the cup, were gonna win the cup…and now are you gonna believe us etc etc were tempting fate. Yes Nick as i walked through the streets of London and veered round by Trafalgar Square the swimming in the fountain was put on hold…apart from the two guys who had started to celebrate prematurely(hee hee) only to be told that we had been beat 2 -1 and thought it was a wind up as they had just left the pub across the road 5 mins b4 the end. Yes a funny old game football. The nation expects this time…i have never seen so many flags on cars, flags draping from windows and people draped in the colours of the St George flag as this time. Pubs as you asked are doing their bit of promo work to get the punters off the street with deals written across the window like ‘Half price drinks if England beat France/Super England Bulldog cocktail for £3.00 ONLY/Free Cocktail fotr everyone if England score 3 goals….and on and on. Yes in answer to your question Nick the nation has been gripped by football fever like i have never seen the likes of B4. I found it quite amazing though how the atmosphere changed in 2 mins though. I could just picture the daily Rags (newspapaers) frantically changing their proposed frist editions and altering all the headline that were going to be on all the first pages of the major tabloid just because a certain Frenchman named Zinane Zidane scored and spoiled this Nations party and a brainless Englishman missed his penalty. That mess of a tatoo on the back of his neck should have the words ‘YOU KNOW’ spelt wrong or perhaps ‘i luv Rebeccca Loos’ emblazioned for all to see. (bitchy i know) What is the situation like in Bali Nick?….Do the Warungs and Bars have any promos over there? Have you noticed certain bars being fuller or is it quite low ket really bearing in mind the low number of Brits and Europeans
in Bali? Did you watch the game Nick?
Perhaps you could hold a football themed BBQ Nick! Well i suppose just getting those Lunar Volcanic Rocks to work ok would be a good start Nick eh?
Good Luck with the BBQ mate..wish i could attend and sampl your ever improving cooking Nick.

Bon apetite Nick
Regardez Mark !

Sorry all you Bali Bloggers who hate football and are wondering what the hell i am going on about but i had to slot this lot in somewhere. Also all you Frenchies out there you were let off the hook by Beckham (the twat) and we will meet again later in the tornament hopefully in the Final and can gain revenge…Ooh la la C-est la vie mon cherrie….

Hi Mark,

When you get down to Indo, ya gotta check out an Indonesian football match. It’s shall we say…different, but, entertaining!.

Indo players take their game very seriously, and sometimes a little too seriously depending on the region.

Stavros, you can buy steak, sausages and all kinds of other favourites at Bali Deli, Bintang and other outlets. Its all here for a bbq.

Julie, you can buy shorts all over. Its hard to get away from them actually just walk around and you’ll see a wide selection in the Poppies Lane area.

Cheers Mark, you painted a very good picture of the pub scene in London for the game. What an exciting finish and I’m sure people were stunned.
I didn’t see the game as it started at 1am but there were bars in Kuta showing in. One of of those is Double D on J. Legian next to Star Surf, they open 24 hours.

Morning Nick/Barrie (well it is here anyway)
Barrie i reckon from how you are desribing an Indo football match that it gets a bit rough and sometimes ends up in a mass brawl….yes i reckon that could be fun to watch and cheer them on
hee hee…must try and watch a rival game where theres a chance of blood sport eh !
Nick 24 hrs bar certainly could come in handy mate…um !

Hi Mark,

Put it this way…The last match I saw, the side that lost, which happened to be the visiting team, burnt down the stadium!. But these are rare occurences.

Actually you are spot on as far as the brawls are concerned. It makes what just happened in Portugal look like kindergarten!. However, most times it’s just great fun to watch (the match Mark, not the fighting!)

The most entertaining part of a football match is afterwards when the teams and their supporters ride through town on their motorbikes displaying all the color.

Barrie i was looking back to last year when you were in Bali doing your ‘Good food Guide’. You certainly sampled the local cuisine mate…..honest with your report…even though i noticed you upset a few people with your report of ‘the secret garden’, only to go back and give it another chance. I know one thing Barrie if you want to know anything about the Grub your ordering you would sure be a handy man to have at the table to recommend certain dishes. It feels like BALI in London today. Its 30 c today….although thats no good when your in the middle of a concrete jungle. Much rather be overlooking the ocean with a refreshing ice cold Bintang in hand eh Barrie. Still soon Barrie hopefully September 7 ish mate. Any ideas when you will be going mate ? With a bit of luck we will be able to time it when Nick is having a string of BBQ’S….You can give it your rating Barrie. I am sure Nick will be top man with his BBQ sans Volcanic Rocks. Roll on Bali i say !

Regs Mark
