Pantai Geger in Nusa Dua Bali

Sunday afternoon Ika and I jumped on the motorbike wanting to get out of Kuta / Seminyak. Nusa Dua was our destination and our route took us onto the Sunset Rd and down to Kuta. At Simpang Siur, the big roundabout we simply followed the signs for Nusa Dua and rode for about 20 minutes till reaching the main gate of the Nusa Dua complex.

For those who have never been to Nusa Dua is on the eastern edge of the Bukit peninsula, the upside down-mushroom shaped plateau at the very southern end of the island. The place feels like Beverly Hills with resort after resort and all the local activity is outside the main gate. We took the right turn off of the Bypass at the main gate and followed it. We actually ended up back inside the complex and rode through the Bali Golf and Country Club, past The Bale and Sekar Nusa to a narrow gang (alley) leading to Pantai Geger (Geger Beach).

Nusa Dua has a coral reef and gets decent surf. Being on the eastern side of the south coast it is favoured in the wet season (right now). Parking at the beach Ika and I walked past a café and the sunbathing tourists. We spotted a headland and some shady looking rocks further along another 200 meters to the right.

This area is very popular with Europeans and their kids and we got comfortable in a shady spot. I went for a soak in the warn water and Ika did her best to fend of stray dogs and ice cream vendors.

For people wishing to sunbathe topless this area is fine. Ladies from Holland and France seemed to be in their element toasting themselves on the yellow sand. Swimming is a bit difficult at low tide as the flat coral reef extends a long way out. Any further and you will get barreled by the surf.

Ika commented that this beach is more pleasant than Kuta beach because of fewer vendors.

I think this is a good place to bring kids as the water is safe to swim in, no waves or currents close by. I am sure little Nick will be getting his feet here sometime in 2005.

Located on the headland of Pura Geger and further along the Nikko Bali hotel. You can access the beach with motorbikes and cars from this end of the beach too just by driving a little further down from the entrance on the main Nusa Dua Rd.

In the other direction right on the beach is the Nusa Dua Beach Grill. We sat there for 30 minutes, Ika with a smoothie and myself with a very nice arak madu. Here is a look at their menu.

For someone staying in Kuta a rented car or motorbike can afford you access to many of the beaches on the Bukit including Pantai Geger and Dreamland on the western side. Driving time back to Kuta was about 20 minutes.

Hi Nick, (or Sean/Chris)

Just a heads up, it’s hit and miss loading your photos over the past few days, mostly miss though. I tried this on several computers, both home and at work, so it’s unlikely that it is at this end.

It took a few days just to see all the dokkar race photos, and this morning the Nusa Dua pix are not loading either.

Cheers, Chris

geger beach has been my favourite beach in Bali for years. I go there every year, religiously. And you are right, the fact that it has less vendors make the beach enjoyable. I’ll be visiting Bali again in coming April, and won’t miss geger beach for the world.
