Our second surfing lesson on Kuta Beach Bali

Monday here in Bali was the day Sean, Chris and I started our meetings to determine what direction we are heading in with BootsnAll.com.

Sean and Chris are staying at the Komala Pantai hotel on Jl. Arjuna on the beach at the end of Jl. Double Six. I joined them for breakfast and after a couple of hours of meetings we rode down to Bali Learn To Surf for our second surf lesson. They usually charge $39 a day for lessons which last about 2 hours.

Luckily for us the owner Matt was there and we got to know him a bit before climbing into our Quicksilver stretchy shirts and picking out our boards. The last time we were here my brother Chris was with us. He’s gone to Malaysia for a wedding and Chris from Brisbane took his place. Sam and Agung were working today and they are very nice people who made us feel comfortable.

Bali Learn To Surf is located in the grounds of Hard Rock Hotel across from Kuta Beach and after a short stroll we were getting ready for another great time. Sam took Chris aside and showed him how to lay on the board and stand up. I could tell that after a few minutes Chris was feeling like a stud.

We saw our other teacher Ferry returning with a client, he was all smiles and very positive.

Today was overcast, a condition that surfers don’t like because they can’t see what’s under them. I know that the beach has a sandy bottom so I wasn’t worried. The surf conditions were different today too. The clean small waves of Friday had given way to larger dumpers and we were forced to ride the white water avalanche into shore. Still this was fairly powerful and for beginners like us it was good to get us riding something.

I snapped Chris getting the hang of things and Sean compounding the skills he’d learned before. I got more rides this time and picked up some more tips from Sam who would be waiting for me in the shallow water. “Don’t look at your feet” he would say “Look at the beach Britney Spears is there waiting for you.” When I looked down at my feet my head bent over and that affected my balance. By looking forwards my weight would be more centered and I’d be angling the board to the direction I wanted to go. Sam also told me not to stop paddling until the board was tilted on the wave. I tried to remember these helpful suggestions but with a nose full of salt water and a wave crashing in front of me I’m sure it looked very sloppy.

We took a breather on the beach and got our complimentary drink from Made the beach vendor who has been working the beach for 15 years. She’s never surfed she told me.

Our lesson was a bit short today as we wanted to get back to meetings but we all had a great time and Chris excelled on his first day.

I strongly recommend taking a lesson if you are in Kuta, the guys are super safety conscious and most of the time you’re in 4 feet of water so no worries if you’re not a strong swimmer.

We’ll be back to rent boards by the day and enjoy surfing Kuta Beach.

Nick,

random question:

My wife and I are hitting Bali on our way to Australia. We will have our laptops with us, but were planning on dumping them somewhere so that we don’t have to drag them around the island. Are there storage lockers at the airport that can be rented for this purpose?

Cheers - see you in Jan!

G’Day Guys,

Excellent pics!. The foto oof Cris and Sean in their Quicksilver gear made them look like Pro’s who had just had a win of the circuit - all that was needed was youse to hold a trophy aloft!.

Loved your style Chris in the surf. I did notice an obvious omission of fotos of Nick carving it up out there. C’on Nick, get snapped!

Duncan, yes there is. Laptops are very valuable though so give me a call when you get here and maybe I can help you while you are exploring the island.

Jason, when its big at Ulu Watu you might see us waxing up.

Excelled might be a bit strong, Nick. Sam told me I was ‘angry’ with my board and I must be happy with my board before I will be able to stand up well. I also forgot to look for Britney Spears on the beach. Great fun though and I can’t wait to get back out there.
