Here in Bali people can be very resourceful and figure out ways to grind out a living on the smallest little activities. While I was eating my lunch today about 6 or 7 separate boys came round selling newspapers. I'm not talking about today's local paper. I mean the Sydney Morning Herald or The Australian. The papers come each in their own clear wrapping and a Jakarta Post will go for an asking price of 35,000rp. They can be relentless and if they see you catching a glimpse of the paper they are waving they come up to the table and hound you. I think they get the papers either from the airport or large hotels in Nusa Dua. There is obviously a well-established channel as these guys are always out hawking them. When you say 'tidak mau'(don't want) they go for the pleading strategy, "Come on boss, just give me 10,000rp for my education."
As far as their education goes they are well ahead of the class when it comes to street marketing, body language being their specialty.
Having access to the internet I never buy newspapers, but for a tourist a long way from home, a Sydney Morning Herald might be just what they need. Be sure to bargain though.
