Names for Nick and Ikas baby in July

Having a child in a foreign country with a foreign partner is interesting and one of the things to negotiate is the name of the kid.

Ika and I have knocked around a few names, mostly Indonesian, and are open to suggestions.

One of the names she suggested that I vetoed immedately was Bemo (a Hindu god). Images of smokey little orange vans driving around Denpasar were not very appealing.

I find that I can handle a lot of the girls names, especially if they are short and roll off the tongue. The boys names are tougher for me as they tend to be less elegant and have a strong dose of nasty built into them. Names like Gatut and Ramelan are just not the ticket. I can see going for a western boys name and a Indonesian girls name. Ika is strongly opposed to anything remotely Balinese, even as a middlename.

Okay folks its your chance to post your suggestions here. Who knows maybe one of yours could win the top spot.

What I am looking for are Indonesian / Javanese / western names, nothing too muslim sounding, no Ali Akbar Muhammeds please.

Nothing you liked on the list I sent you?. I still reckon ‘Asri’ is a beautiful name for a girl. As for a boy, well I’d stick to an unusual western name.

Thanks for the tips so far. Maybe I could go for a good old American name : Bo, Hank, Norm, Elmer, Earl, Marv, Virgil. Or maybe a good old Aussie name: Davo, Brado, Stevo. Or a London name: Geezer, Bert, Malcolm ,Nigel.

Years ago I saw a hippie in Queensland name his son after everything he liked : John sunshine mango marley rastaman surfing koala ocean thunder cones Smith. Maybe I will do the same : Paul bintang bbq empty roads tidak corrupsi dry season stadium cafe nasi padang O’Neill.

Well for obvious reasons I’d go with Dharma…
But just incase…. I am not giving away my names , you might steal them!!!!

I actually really like Sanjaya, it’s a funky name & same with Tio. What about Ky, or Ty, or Jai or something easy!?

Good Luck Nick & Ika… Wait until you meet him or her & the name will come to you, although I already have mine picked, one of each, so if I got twins of same sex I’d be up the creek!!!!

Hi Nick,
Congratulations and all the best for your upcoming wedding and birth of your child. I have been following your life in Bali for around 18 months now on this site and being a Bali-o-phile look forward to reading daily updates. It’s a welcome distraction from work and helps me escape to Bali for a short time during lunch. My wife is Balinese and we have often discussed if we had kids what would we call them. I think you’re right in saying a girls name is easier to choose than a boys. Although I was never really fond of the name Angus, we thought it would work so well in both countries. In Bali (or Indonesia) they would call him simply Gus and in Aus he would get either Gus or Angus with the obvious differences in pronounciation. So you get a western name that works both sides of the world. Anyway, just a thought.
Either a boy or a girl you will have beautiful children, mixed marriages always do.
Cheers.

In Indonesian, ‘angus’ means burnt/over-grilled. Agus is a common Indonesian though.

Wow! Thanks for that Arga. I am surprised my wife did not pick that up. Yeah, I was thinking of the Angus being close to Agus
so there would be western name with close link to Bali and no problem for his Bali relatives to pronounce or shorten.
Cheers

I spent some of the happiest days of my life in Bali. It was a few months before my daughter was born and I was inspired to name her Devi. A second choice was Lakshmi.

Bali is truly a magical place once you get away from Denpassar and all the touristy parts. We often hiked off through the rice paddies where there were no roads, finding villages where they never saw tourists. The people we met were always quick to share anything they had and to invite us to stay in their homes.

I’ve been all over the world and found the Balinese to be among the warmest, kindest people anywhere.
