Indonesian Muslims will be helping police to ensure the safety of Christians worshipping at churches over Christmas. In 2000 many churches wer attacked by a tiny minority of trouble makers and 19 people were killed. This did not reflect the general population and was the work of extremist groups.
This latest move was organized by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Indonesia’s largest Muslim organisation. NU’s youth wing, the Bansar will help police protect churches over Christmas and entertainment and city center venues over New Years. Great to see the community pulling together and also the police actively going after terrorists.
Right after the October 1st Bali Bomb II, security was stepped up at most of the high profile Bali nightlife places, with electronic scanners being used on people. New Years last year in Bali was a great time according to one friends of mine. Jl. Dhyana Pura was awash with people who came form as far as Jakarta. The street will see a lot of action this year too, but it wil be somewhat quieter, due to the fact that some venues have closed, including Space, Spy Bar and Tu Bar.
