Sunday night in Seminyak I had an appointment with Steve and Lara from Perth who are visiting right now.
Steve had emailed me from the website and we arranged to watch the ‘footie’ (Aussie Rules) at Bush Telegraph, the Australian themed bar opposite Santa Fe on Jl. Dhyana Pura at 10.30pm.
I had spent an hour down the road at Tu Bar playing one of the waiters at pool and arrived about 10pm. I had never met Steve or Lara but we made eye contact immediately and sat out the front chatting.
Steve is a gold-miner in WA (I’ve met plenty of gold diggers on Jl. Dhyana Pura but never a gold-miner) and Lara owns the Indigo Net Caf & Lodge in Scarborough, which is on the beach in Perth.

Steve told me his job requires him to fly out to the mine and work 2 weeks of 12 hour shifts, before getting to come home for a week. He works 2km underground in sweltering heat and it is very physically demanding. It sounds like hard work and I’m sure Steve deserves every penny he makes. Lara is a member of the West Coast Eagles supporters club and attends every home game. While Steve and I were chatting Lara was glued to the TV.
Coming from England I assumed all Australians love the Aussie Rules, but it is very location specific and outside of Victoria and Perth the game seems to take a back seat to rubgy. The game we were watching was between Perth and local rivals Fremantle and was important as far as which team moves up towards the Grand Final.
I have never really hung out in the Bush Telegraph before and have wondered why it is never busy when across the street Santa Fe is packed. I now have a few ideas why. The entrance isn’t as open as Santa Fe and it is more of a ‘commitment’ to walk in and check the place out. Santa Fe’s bar is right next to the street, all open and low commitment. While we sat and chatted a local band knocked out their version ‘Walk of Life’ by Dire Straits and other out of date tunes. The volume was high which made talking a bit hard and the empty bar didn’t seem impressed either. I can imagine when times were good having 100 happy Aussies in there the place would seem like a good time but the Crocodile Dundee slant doesn’t work with Euro’s or Asian visitors.
Steve blew my mind when he told me that while working at the mine he gets online in the evenings and reads Baliblog. “I hope you read my emails first.” piped in Lara. Its so funny that there can be all these cool people doing drastically different jobs who for some reason want info on Bali.
Part way through the game an old face showed up. It was Pedro (Tracey’s cousin) from Melbourne and his friend from Java who’s name escapes me. Pedro has been out here for a couple of weeks and I’m sorry he’s leaving before I can throw a bbq for him. Pedro told me he has been surfing at Canggu and Dreamland and generally enjoying himself, that’s the spirit!
Pedro drank a beer with us and headed home and I ended up leaving at 2am! What a good time and I will join Steve and Lara for dinner on Wednesday.
