Sitting in a cafe on Jl. Hanuman today typing up some of notes, I ran into Stacia from California. Stacia is an English teacher who has lived for 3 years in Bangkok but would like to move to Bali fulltime. Being an expat in Bali is attractive because of the developed scene here and Ubud is one of the centers. The kind of people Ubud attracts usually are oriented towards art and culture rather than surf and party The expat crown in Ubud is tight. I reckon you can meet most of the movers and shakers in no time living here. Stacia definitely knows a lot of people and in between getting massages, meeting friends for drinks and eating organic food she is figuring out if she is going to stay in Bali. Teaching English is easy in Bangkok, plenty of corporations with family members who want to learn. Bali is a harder nut to crack. Not so many people with a lot of disposble income and a lot of local people who speak English.
In the mean time Ubud is the perfect place to catch up on down time. You can learn to paint, carve, play the gamelan, make batik or do whatever. Simply interacting with Balinese people on their speed is freshing for a westerner. I think being an expat in Ubud would be a wonderful opportunity to create some unique events among friends, movie, nights, music nights, game night, bbqs. Definitely when the sun goes down here the place winds down too.
