Meeting Rob, Bev, Samantha, Jessica and Melanie in Kuta Bali

Finally got to meet Rob s family from Sydney ( Bev, Jessica, Samantha and Melanie ). They’ve been coming to Bali for years and it was great to talk to them about how Bali has changed.

Rob said that on their last trip over here they made friends with thr guys at Adrenaline Bungy which is nowout of business and it was a cool place to hang out. Their friend Made, who drove them all over last time contacted them and they met again.

On this trip Rob and Bev decided to go with a more affordable hotel, one with separate cottages and said the staff make the place worse by being noisy in the morning and hanging around the property till 2am playing snooker.

Aussies have the reputation of being laid back and in Rob’s case it true. I love the way he’s willing to risk his whole family for a good time. He told me about the white water rafting they did on their last trip here during the wet season. The river was raging and the guides were looking for an opportunity to go for a launch. They finally got going and everybody made it to the end still in the boat.

On this trip Rob said he hired some surf boards and pushed his the girls ( the youngest 9 ) into the pounding surf… ‘ah well they’re all pretty good swimmers’. Wish my dad was that cool.

Bev and Samantha had a argument with one of Bali’s stray dogs the other day and came off their motorbike. Samantha scraped her arm a bit but otherwise is okay. Her backpack broke her fall and she landed on her camera which is damaged.

They leave on Sunday and I’m looking for a crocodile wrestling outfit or a ‘fire yourself from a cannon’ deal for their last day here, wouldn’t want them to get bored.

We met at the muslim pizza place adjacent to Warung 96 and Rob bought me a veggie pizza. Bev and Rob grow chilis back in Sydney and ordered pizza with chili. Poor Bev got a bit more than she bargained for at one point.

The ladies left after dinner and Rob and I chatted for a while about life and travel…the 2 important things.

Hope to see them all before they leave and am glad to have met them.

Nick, if you want to give GWK (Garuda Wisnu Kencana) a ring regarding the peace awards, the number is 703603. It is going to be awesome!.
Tracey, thanks heaps for the URL and I did check it out and you are right. It will be fantastic!. I am looking forward to it and intend to take heaps of fotos. The Indo Govt MIGHT cover the event in some way and show it on the box. In Oz if you tune into SBS at 11am in the mornings you get the TVRI news. Maybe, just maybe they will show it. I tape the news with the ol’ VCR and watch it at night.

Barrie,
I think it will be telecast, live(ish).
Considering the Bali Bombing & Aussie lives lost, I think any Peace Awards is worth showing, but I think the Aust Govt will show it, or if not & they are reading this most definately SHOULD!!!
Spewing it’s not while we are there!!!
Have a Blast! 10 wks & 2 days!

Nick, glad to read that you are hopeful in attending the Music Awards. Good old Oz band INXS will be there. Also MOBY and CHERYL CROW, and not forgetting the enormous talent from around the world. I reckon it will be a great post for those who can’t be there Nick.
Tracey, glad to see you are counting in weeks now and not days!. I am down to days and only have 18. It will be a case of R & R for me - Rest and Reorientation. It has been 7 years since I stayed in Bali and no doubt I will see a huge difference. I’m looking forward to it even though I will miss Java!.

Tracey, just been rustling through some of my old travel diaries and it seems that it has been 10 years and not 7 since I stayed in Bali!. Wow!. Had overnight stops on the way to Java, but never really got to look around. Seems I am in for a HUGE surprise eh.

I’m curious as to why the World Peace Concert is happening the same day/evening as the opening of the Bali Arts Festival in Denpasar….

Barrie,
It is always quite interesting to see how time get’s away from us & things really seem like only yesterday when in fact they weren’t!
I have a great friend from Seattle & we always used to meet up in Bali every year or even more often! She’d be there for 4 months & I was usually there for 6-8. We are still in contact & she recently said to me…” Remember 3 years ago we used to go out every night with the boy’s & we rented those rooms in Ubud, where we had to walk half an hour through Rice Fields to get there? those were my fondest memories of Bali!” I laughed & said it was atleast 2 years before I had Maddison & she is now 4+, so it was much more than 3 years when we stayed there.. We were amused & shocked that it seemed like less, much less time!
You will be flabber gasted at the change, each time I arrive I notice hundreds of new or different things!
Each time is different! Wow not long now for you hey! We have 6 more Indo Classes & then 4 weeks from then, I like to count this way it seems quicker!?

Hi Tracey, I know exactly what you mean about ‘I remember when…’
I have decided to take a very positive view on Bali when I return (in 15 days!) and definitely not compare Bali ‘now’ to the Bali I used to know. I like that word you used - flabbergasted - but I think ‘overwhelmed’ would be a word I would use at this moment.

Barrie,

I’ll set you onto a part of the coast that will blow you away and feel like 20 years ago.

Rob,

I’m glad to hear Made’s wife had no problems and that Made has a healthy new daughter.

Hey Nick,
Oooh, I enjoy getting blown away!. It’s not very often you come across places these days that are untouched by western influence.
Have you made it up into the Holy Land (a phrase coined by the travel writer Bill Dalton)??. If not, perhaps we can cruise up there when I get to Bali.
