Meeting travelers is always fun when I get the chance and last night I met some more cool people.
Palu from Palu surfboards had given my phone number to 2 ladies travelling across Indonesia and we arranged to meet at Rumours in Seminyak for dinner at 8pm. We’d never met and the ‘beacon’ was my motorcross helmet. “I’ll be the only person in the place with a red and white helmet.” I said.
Jetting up from Kuta to take a quick shower I arrived about 7.55pm to a packed house. I asked for a table and sat at the bar with a glass of red wine. Within 2 minutes Miranda from Holland and Stacia from the US had found me and our table was ready. Coincidentally Dallas Finn from Bali Peace Park was also sitting at the bar and I got to introduce the ladies to him.
The reason Miranda called me in the first place was she wanted to tap my brain about Bali which is fine with me. We got seated and Miranda told me she had moved out to Irian Jaya a year and a half ago to work at a dive resort. She told me the diving is so great there as it is very remote that diving anywhere else now would not be so fun. Miranda is looking for a job in the hotel industry here in Bali as Holland doesn’t quite feel like where she wants to be right now. She met Stacia in Surabaya Java while travelling.
Stacia from Arkansas, California and all over the US told me she had spent the last couple of years in Bangkok teaching. She’s positive about the experience although said that even for her ( she’s a cultural anthropologist) there is a time when she feels some of the little daily things starting to get to her.
While we were sitting enjoying our food and me going on about Bali a fellow sitting at the next table leans over and says “Are you Nick from Baliblog?” I didn’t recognize him but he said he wanted to buy me a couple of beers! A short while later Peter came to join us with his Japanese girlfriend who’s name escapes me. He lives in Sapporo Japan and I had corresponded with him about buying a new surfboard and somehow he recognized me in a busy place like Rumours.
True to his word he bought me a couple of beers and after Miranda and Stacia left invited me back to his place which is located close to Bintang supermarket. Once again it blew me away meeting a new person who knows about my life. Peter looks like he owns a yacht in Monte Carlo and told me late at night he sometimes browses the site. “I don’t lead a very interesting life” I told him “In fact I do less exciting stuff that most people.”
Peter asked if there was a bbq coming up and I said there is one planned for this coming Sunday. He suggested having at his place as he has a pool. Very nice of him indeed and I look forward to taking a dip while waiting for the meat to cook. With that we all decided to ride over to his place and check it out. Behind Bintang supermarket in Seminyak is a maze of alleys with small villa type places and I’m going to have to try hard to find this place again. He’s got a small pool, open-air living room and an air-con bedroom. The place is cool and you’ll get to see what it looks like shortly. I didn’t ask him the price but I think he got a good deal on it.
Peter has been involved in many occupations including accounting and owning a bar in Japan. Right now he’s a school teacher, a job he says he enjoys.
I took off and am eager to contact as many people as possible for our wild pool-party. Angie will get her first bbq in Bali!

Barrie, I’m still trying to acquire a camera so you can see these people. Hopefully will by the time the bbq happens.
G’Day Folks,
An article from today’s Jakarta Post which I found disgusting. As an environmentalist at heart, I believe animals belong in their natural habitat to live in peace and without fear…

G’Day Nick,
This is what I like about the Balilog…you introduce us to so many interesting characters.
I thought your helmet would have been in Arsenal colours mate!. After all, red & white - aren’t they the colours of a great football team! (He, he…!)
