Saturday morning bright and early my phone rang and I got a call from Fauzi, a tourist from Singapore. We had never met but he found me through Baliblog and wanted to meet. So at noon I arrived at Mades Warung wearing my USC baseball hat. We had arranged that he would look out for my hat that said SC. Mades Warung on Jl. Pantai Kuta is actually a good place to meet because it is open to the street and has long bench seats in places that are great for a group to get close and chat. Fauzi is over here for 10 days with his girlfriend Siti and are staying at Bali Sandat II on Jl. Benesari. I got a laugh because Fauzi pulled out a printed copy of my Kuta map. Great that it can help someone.
We got acquainted and they both filled me in as to what life in Singapore is like. Fauzi spent 2 years in the police force for his mandatory national service. He told me that when a male child is born in Singapore, right afterwards the parents have to sign a bond that says they promise to put a sum of $35,000 up if the child goes overseas for study. If the child fails to come back within 2 years they will lose the money. Singapore is serious about its national service. Fortunately for the ladies they are not required to do national service. Siti said that kids in Singapore are very spoiled and the national service really turns them into men.
Sitting next to us were the Harley crew from Jakarta, who were very friendly. We all had a good time and I look forward to getting together with Fauzi and Siti soon.

I went to Bali already 1984 and just looooved it. Should only stay for a few weeks, but got the “Bali-decease” and stayed several months. Met a very nice friend there Dick Laan, (imagine this is 20 years ago, he has to be around the 50´s now..) He lived in Bali but was from Holland. We lost contact, but we always went to PAgopago and MAdes Warung (Mades was so hip at the 80´s, and a very simple but soft place) Oh what I miss that time - the best in my life!
G’Day Nick,
Great to see that your maps are being used. Good one!. They seem like a nice couple. I’m not sure about the mandantory national service though!. Seems a tad regulatory.
By the way, glad to see things are back on track with articles about BALI.
