claire_fontana072405.jpgSunday midday I had a date to meet up with Claire Fontana from San Francisco. Claire is in Bali for 2 weeks and is doing a surf lesson down at Bali Learn To Surf in Kuta. She suggested we meet and wanted to ask me some questions. I showed up at her hotel on Jl. Petitenget in Kerobokan and then forgot I only had one helmet. Oh well, I thought, traffic heading down to Kuta goes about 20kmh so I gave my helmet to Claire and rode without one, something I never do. Her lesson was scheduled for 3pm and I could tell it was going to be challenging as the wind was very strong. I drove us to La Cabana at the end of Jl. Benesari. That place had undergone some renovation recently and has some loungy type beds and couches for the cool-heads to sprawl on and pretend they are Caesar in Rome. One cool thing about La Cabana is they sell Storm beer, so Claire and I had one.

Here alone for the first time Claire said after 2 days in the Kuta area she is ready to get out of it and see a more interesting part of Bali. I highly recommended getting her own transport and she plans to take the Perama bus to Ubud, stay there for 4 days and then rent a Suzuki Jimmy, for a trip around East Bali. Claire has the latest copy of LPs guide to Bali and really likes it, saying it has been very accurate so far. I pointed out some white sand beaches in the area and in other parts of Bali and gave some general info on the scene she can expect in different areas. A great thing about Bali is that so much is accessible if you make the effort and safe for a solo female.

But how did she surf? Did she get up or splash down? How hard was it with the wind up?
