Today I was eagerly expecting my brother Chris, the fellow responsible for Londonblog.
He was arriving from KL at around 12.30pm. This morning I had Made from Bali Land and Houses round with a workman fixing a couple of lamps that were out. Still have other things that need fixing but I guess they will get to them later.
I took a taxi to the airport and was very early. Strolling round the arrival terminal I watched happy tourists arrive from Singapore and Jakarta. The airport at Ngurah Rai isn’t huge and for large parts of the day seems quiet. At noon today today they had a flurry of planes landing.
On the way to the airport my phone rang and it was Erica Takeuchi who I met in Bangkok an while ago with Sean. She came in last night and was staying at the Tanjung Inn on Poppies II.
Finally met up with Chris and after a quick ride up the Sunset Rd in a taxi we cracked open a cold one in my back lounge area and chatted. The day was still young so I introduced him to motorbikes with a trip to Kuta and all it offers. Its still a zoo with all the domestic tourists and we strolled along Kuta beach, Chris looking around for a t-shirt and shorts.
It was another hot day today and Chris’s first thought that Bali wasn’t that hot was dispelled after walking for a hour. We took shade in Cafe Bali on Poppies II with a cool watermelon juice. I was thyinking about contacting Erica and as luck ould have in her guest house was about 20 meters away. I located her room and found her sitting on the porch. Us BootsnAll members don’t waste time and in under 5 minutes Erica was ready to join us heading back to my house in Seminyak. We got to know each other a bit better, Chris wondering how I can just produce random travellers out of thin air, and walked over to Made’s Warung for a nasi campur ( 15,000rp). Made’s Warung in Seminyak in an expat hangout and is a decent place, though not super expensive. Erica commented that it felt like a place in California where a person had come to Indonesia and said ‘I’m going make a version of that back home.’
Made’s Warung is a stone’s throw from Jl. Dhyana Pura and we walked across to Santa Fe bar for a beer or 2. Erica told us some interesting toilet stories from Cambodia and I got her back with Mick’s cockroach story ( at one of Jakarta’s most fancy nightclubs his friend started gagging on a mixed drink only to have a massive cockroach appear from his mouth).
I could tell Chris was very tired and we caught another taxi back to my house before me giving her a ride home on my bike. I offered her the rainjacket but she declined. In our final 400 meters from Poppies II it poured down and she got a good soaking.
We have planned to meet up tomorrow and all go to one of the beaches on the Bukit.

Hi Nick,
I have been reading through your comments on your Blog… You seem to have quiet a bit of knowledge on Bali to say the least. My friend and I have just booked a holiday in Jan for 8 nights we are staying in seminyak. Just wondering if you have any advice for us. This is our first trip to Bali and we are a little hesitent on a few things.
Jade,
I’d say explore the island if you can. Hiring a car is easy ( with driver or without).
Seminyak is a great area for restaurants and nightlife, also the beach.
If you have more specific questions I’m happy to answer.
Chris O’Neill–you just wait til January and then you can spontaneously pull a traveler out of thin air for your friends. I’ll be around.
Nick–Yes, you are a gentleman. Give that lovely girl a few more years and she’ll learn not to turn down a chivalrous act!
Geez Nick, if you put a pair of glasses on your brother then he would be the spitting image of you!.
Erica is yummy!
