The latest visitor to Bali I had the pleasure of meeting was Chris So from Toronto Canada.
He called me as I was walking down Poppies II on my way to Pantai Kuta around 5pm. I didn’t realize it but Chris was in Internet Outpost when I was there and after he said “I’m the guy with the big camera” I knew exactly who he was talking about.
We met and strolled over to Bali Corner at the corner of Jl. Benesari and Poppies II. They always manage to serve cold beer and I reward them for this by going there.
Chris is actually originally from Surabaya Java and his family moved to Canada when he was 4. He has been back once before but has no plans to live in Indonesia. Back in Toronto he works for the Toronto Star newspaper as a photo editor. The amount of gear he was packing along with the photo vest told me this guy was the real deal. I showed him my point and shoot and he gave me a couple of tips.
Chris gave me the huge compliment of saying after he makes his coffee in the morning he turns on his computer and checks Baliblog. For me that is awesome news and I thank all the people who do the same. I was telling Chris that I don’t regard myself as an expert on Bali, I’m just a guy who lives here and the only thing I’m an expert on is what I do everyday. I can share my observations and form opinions that sometimes are wrong. By sharing those opinions I can stimulate other people to respond. That helps to educate me and all the other readers. This is all good and I welcome constructive criticism.
Chris is here in Bali on a short trip. While here he is learning to dive out in Tulamban in preparation for a trip to Kalimantan. He’s already got the underwater housing ready for his Canon wonder camera and I know he’ll get great shots.
Living here in Bali and knowing how to handle the touts and taxi drivers I take it for granted. Chris speaks Indonesian much better than I do but still got taken pretty good by one taxi driver. I’ve got to remember that no matter how much experience someone has travelling, a new environment temporarily disorientates and that can leave you open to loosing some money. When you get to Bali ask people what the prices are, feel free to negotiate and don’t give people like taxi drivers the opportunity to take advantage.
Hope to meet up with Chris again soon and will definitely check out his newspaper, the Toronto Star.
I had to make a quick dash home for a shower because I was invited to have dinner at Kori Restaurant by the manager.
