Meeting Brien and Mike at Swell in Kuta Bali

Friday afternoon I arranged to meet Mike Hillis and Brien Moore from England (living in Perth) at the Swell, surf bar on Poppies I in Kuta. Brien contacted me from the site and I was trying to get hold of some other people as well whose numbers I seem to have lost. Swell is a Japanese / Balinese surfer bar that has been open a few months. I showed up around 4.15pm and Brien was already there. We'd never met but he emailed me a picture earlier on. As a Perth resident and Birmingham City fan, he talked about how handy Bali was, just a 3 and a half-hour flight. He has been here 10 times in the last 4 years and feels pretty comfortable staying at the Ayu Beach Inn on Poppies I. He said the staff leaves you along and are good for a laugh.

We talked about the Schapelle Corby trial and Brien said where he lives people pretty much have their minds made up about the whole issue. He said it was nice to be able to hear other possible scenarios from people who live here. Brien said I was a good sport for taking some personal criticism for some of my articles and I told him it was par for the course, if you post your thought in public you have to deal with the flack. Mike Hillis showed up and we had a great conversation about life in the modern world, George W Bush and John Howard. Mike and Brien are equally against either politician and their spirit was fun to see. We all went to Kuta Beach around sunset and continued our conversation. The beach was unbelievably busy this afternoon, just like Idul Fitri.
