Wednesday morning in Seminyak I walked down to Cafe Seminyak on Jl. Seminyak only to find they had no coffee! Imagine a cafe without coffee. Oh well. Returning home I got a call from South African traveler Anton, who got to Bali a couple of days ago. We arranged to meet at Good Luck restaurant on Jl. Benesari in Kuta at 1pm and I arrived a bit early. Good Luck has a mellow, surfer friendly atmosphere. Its located next to SurfTravelOnline and when I was there I ran into Peter Cox the owner. He sells surf trips all over Indonesia from Timor to the Mentawai's.
Waiting for Anton I got a call from his taxi driver, "Where is Good Luck, I am on Jl. Legian?" maybe I should of suggested Hard Rock Cafe.
Anton finally showed up and we chatted for hours. He's originally from Cape Town and after spending 4 years in London is moving to Australia. Anton is in the IT industry and is also a great surfer. Last night he was in Tubes on Poppies II in Kuta sizing up the big wave and told me he's planning to spend a few nights down in Bingin. Of course I invited him to my bbq this Sunday and he told me he would show me how it's done, Springbok style. He said he used to joke with his friends in London about English bbq's I said "What are you talking about, we don't have them its too rainy." He said Aussies can do them okay but Yanks are hopeless. I guess when all you've got to survive on is a wildebeest and a king cobra you'll figure out how to grill. The S.Africans do have a reputation with the bbq. We'll see how it turns out. Of course with the German charcoal I could bbq a Buick without any trouble.
Anton has 2 weeks in Bali and is right now staying in Kuta and surfing Kuta Reef. Its really easy to get a boat from in front of the Discovery Mall to drop you off and pick you up 2 hours later. I told him Bingin is a bit of a zoo as there is only 1 take off point but he is experienced and has been out here several years ago.
Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and one might wonder why someone would want to leave it. I think Anton feels that the infrastructure, job opportunities and personal safety are factors for him. I'd like to check out the place sometime and it sounds like an interesting place. Anton was telling me about Cape Malays, Muslim Asians who live there and who originate from Java. It's a mixed bag and has surfing right there if you can handle a shark or 2.
