Making rujak on the porch in Seminyak Bali

rujak062405.jpgIka and her mum had a good time afternoon slicing up unripe fruit to make the Indonesian snack called rujak. Rujak is a fruit salad made from a variety of fruits including papaya, apple, pear, mango and melon. There are some fruits I don't recognize too. On Kuta beach the rujak sellers give chili, salt and a caramel, so you can confuse your taste buds to perfection. Ika's mother, who I call Ibu, got into the chopping with gusto and seems happy to linger on the floor and go about things she's used to. Earlier on today she was in the bath tub with a scrubbing brush cleaning clothes. Maybe later I can get her on the roof to check my internet antenna. Its safe up there, no really!

I ate some her home made food today which was rice (surprise, surprise), with vegetables in a light curry sauce. Not bad and its interesting that Ika's mum is half Chinese and also a Muslim.

G’day Nick,

Why don’t you go all the way and get your Ibu to spit polish the motorbike, or, even scrub the BBQ!. Aahh, the list is endless eh…
