Saturday afternoon I got a call from ScottyCol (real name Colin) who is staying in Taman Mekar guesthouse on Jl. Benesari in Kuta. The time was getting on for 2pm but we agreed to meet at Gong Corner for lunch. I got stuck in traffic and was late but when I arrived he was sitting there with the menu. There were only a couple of people there at I ordered fish & chips for 12,000rp, Colin getting a sweet & sour prawn dish. My meal was just the right, pretty generous actually and the watermelon juice was lovely. Scotty downed a few papaya juices, which are thicker than the usual juices and are more like a lassi in texture. I'm quite partial to mango juice, which is good for taste though maybe not so much a thirst quencher.
We got talking about travelling and our stories went on all afternoon. Swapping tales and tips is so much fun and often when I hear people talk about their adventures they resemble my own. Colin told me about camping in Canada and being a little freaked out by the wildlife (bears and wolves). I told him about getting chased by a moose in Alaska and escaping by running between 3 closely packed trees (their antlers are 6ft wide). No kidding, if you've traveled free-style you've lived. Taking nothing away from people who haven't, but stepping into the unknown and living in the moment is something we rarely do and it is so rewarding.
Colin told me that he celebrated New Years Millenium at a bar in Kuta. He said the amazing thing was on tv they kept showing a different island with each group of people as the world turned, ranging from Papuans with bones through their nose, to villagers in Flores to Bali. Indonesia is culturally probably the most interesting country in the world as far as indigenous culture. Then you have the whole 'higher cultural impact' from India and the Middle East as well as China and you step back in amazement.
Colin is leaving tomorrow and this Saturday night is his last big hurrah for a while. We agreed that next time he's in Bali we would get together much earlier and get him some bbq action. (I'm drinking that red wine you gave me while writing this! Cheers mate.)
