Lock your bags when coming to Bali

A recent newspaper article says that Australian tourists are taking no chances when coming to Bali and are locking their bags. I would say that is a good idea. When I travel I take a backpack which is very easy to get into. I think maybe the Australian customs should insist all non-secure bags are placed inside a clear plastic sack and sealed, like in the US.

The article also goes on to say some people are not coming to Bali as they feel Schapelle Corby got a bum deal from the Indonesian police. Put yourself in their position. A foreign national arrives with a bag of drugs and a customs slip from their own country saying they packed their bags themselves. What would you do? Its actually an open and shut case.

If there was any tampering it was done in Australia and that is beyond their jurisdiction. The AFP should be all over the staff at Brisbane and Sydney airports interviewing and asking questions. That is where you will get the evidence that might affect the case.

The Balinese justice system did its job and one can only hope some new facts from the Australian side can help Schapelle.

G’Day Nick,

Read a small article about the new seal-locks for suitcases in the Weekend Australian Travel section. I’ll be buying some for my bags. The site for those wanting to check it out is http://www.tampertell.com

I rang Downtown Duty Free and they will have them in store next month. Retail around AUD$10 for 20 tags.

At least with these tage you will soon know if your cases have been tampered with.

Good advice Baz.
It’s a real tricky one. On the one hand you want to believe that Schapelle is innocent but on the other I hate all the stories of boycotting Bali because they haven’t treated her right. I don’t know how many places between getting your tickets and arriving at Denpasar you read that “trafficking drugs is punishable by death in some countries” and yet it still happens! (All too frequently of late as we have seen) Surely someone walking through an airport in Australia would be noticed with that much canabis and who was there to pick it up off her in Bali?
Like Nick says I think Indonesia is doing it tough enough without all this bad publicity from foreigners wanting to make a quick buck.
Hey but that’s just my oppinion……

Thanks Barrie for the tip on the tags - I will be getting them for my next trip - and not just for Bali - bag tampering can happen when you go anywhere.
People really do need to realise that the Indo police are simply doing their job, the same as any police in any country.
I really hope people in general are not silly enough to think that it is Bali’s fault that drug runners have targeted it at the moment - at least we can see that something is being done about it which should make everyone feel safer as long as they take pre-cautions with their luggage and simply go for a wonderful holiday as we all have many many times. At the same time I hope the Balinese people will be understanding to us Aussies as the majority of us are simply Bali-loving tourists who want to keep our favourite holiday destination as trouble free as possible.

Hi Nick,
I’m a year 12 student doing a media research assessment on the Corby case. I need some material that shows the Balinese point of view to create a contrast. Can you help me out??? Is there anything in the Balinese papers that you could get hold of for me?
Your Truely,

I think I noticed coming out of melbourne the other day a few of the bags looked like they were commercially wrapped in plastic. I don’t know where in the airport that the service is being offered but I’ll check it out next time I go through and let you know where it is.

Bag wrapping costs $8.00 from melbourne airport. We use it everytime we go to Bali. It serves two purposes safety and it protects your bag as well. I find that my suitcases a noticeably less crushed when using the wrapping.

Does anyone know what other security choices we have in Perth to secure our luggage, apart from the Tags, which sound very good. Eg bag wrapping

Garry,

I do believe that there will be bag-wrapping available at Perth International at the beginning of July. That’s the news I heard recently on SBS radio.

I certainly intend to ‘Tag and wrap’!

I got mine security tags from Bag Secure

http://bagsecure.com

Wouldn’t travel without them again.

Check these security tags out:

http://www.bagsecure.com

I used them when I went to Thailand - cheap and very visible in bright colours so they should deter anyone from trying to get into your bags.

And if someone does get in…you know!

Cheaper than plastic wrap as well.

I took some photos on my digital camera when I checked in so if there were any problems I could prove that the bags were tagged when I left.
