Bali offers a change from the western world in terms of ideas, perceptions and expectations. Balinese people tend to have a relaxed attitude to life and tend not to get bent out of shape over tiny insignificances like us westerners. I frequent a Kuta restaurant that is popular with the surfing crowd and particularly the surfing expat crowd. One attraction is the food, another is the friendly waitresses who greet passersby and encourage them to come in. I talked to some of the staff recently who were coming to terms with a new western owner. Management styles differ depending on the place and the person. The new management prefers the McDonalds style of clean, clean, clean and not so much of the customer familiarity with the regulars.
I think part of the attraction of some of these restaurants is the pretty Balinese girls serving who exhibit a natural gracefulness and elegance. Turning them into a cleaning squad is not the answer.
Anyway I hope things work out and this meeting of cultures will be a learning experience for all concerned.
