Latest from Barrie on Yogya quake

As many people are aware, Barrie has lived in Yogyakarta for 10 years, before moving back to Perth. His wife, Candika, still lives in Yogya. Barrie has posted to his site, PlanetMole, the latest details.

Barrie was nice enough to send me a lengthy email, as the story progressed. Here’s part of it, detailing the earthquake damage in Yogyakarta.

Here’s what Barrie said:
“Shaken but not stirred!. Thanks so much for asking mate. As I wrote on Planet Mole, I got an SMS from her this morning at 6.30am. It is worse than what the news is reporting. There are two houses side by side in her family and both suffered structural damage. Her shop on Jl Poncowinatan copped it bad.

Watched the early news tonight on the box and it showed the airport. The roof collapsed and there is a big split in the runway. Maliboro Mall has been damaged pretty bad but don’t know about the Ibis hotel which adjoins that. Jl Maliobro is closed off to traffic and most people will be sleeping on the road tonight.”

Candika is fine and let’s hope the death toll doesn’t get any higher.

Barrie- They are saying here that it was 6.2 earthquake. Thank goodness Candika is safe. Hey -you didn’t mention her shop before (that I can remember), what kind of a shop is it? We would have gone by when we were there if we had known, never hurts to suggest a decent business when you know one. Please keep us up on the news, we are only getting 30 second bites and it will be old news in two days, of course a couple of movie stars baby will be news for months or years here in the US. Thanks–Cathleen

My families live there (south of yogya, bantul). They said it was like hell, Last night it was rain too. They said the situation is like a war. like a refugees in vietnam, It was rain, and they had no tent or roof over their head, no blanket, and the only cloth the got is what they wear. It was cold.
