Foriegners often dream of owing land in Bali and builiding their dream. Technically it is illegal for a non Indonesian to own land. You can lease land, usually for 25 years and it will go back to the landowner after that. Many ‘bules’ arrange to buy land through a local with tricky paperwork, which in my view is a whole can of worms.
The Bali Update which is out every monday talks about regulations that limit the use of land by foreigners to 25 years. This law, according to Indonesian real estate experts, is holding back the industry. In Jakarta there are many wealthy foreingers who would like to buy an apartment and plenty of people willing to sell.
My friends up at Eco Lodge lease their land meaning it will revert back to the owner someday. They are great friends with local people and have a very open style of house. To this day nothing has been stolen and the locals are assured that the land and buildings will be theirs in time.
You can build a dream house in Bali, but there are more pitsfalls than back in Australia that you might not be aware of.

well, you can rent a place for 25 years, 25 years without hassle… i know, it’s never gonna be your house, but who cares, as long as the house is yours when you’re alive.
It’s nicer to pay for your own house, but just .. fuck it, it’s not as if the prices are unovercomable or a word like that
i am australian born, my husband is from bali and we have a daughter,we have land in bali (in my husbands name)if something was to happen to him with the law in indonesia the way it is how can we be sure she will get what is rightfully hers.
The deal is, lease for 25 years, with an option to renew, and think about it as a “for use” property (not an investment) i.e., for your own use in your own lifetime–forget about leaving it to your kids. Do the math–if you are in your 40’s, this could be the deal of a lifetime!
This law makes sense as far as Bali goes, in my opinion.
